Ampex Products Chronology Tools

Chronology and product notes compiled by Howard Sanner (Draft: 29 Oct 1995; Rev. 4 Nov 1999) document Ampex professional audio and video equipment, principally drawing on the Ampex Fact Book (1970). Entries describe machines such as the Ampex 7500 (first color-capable Type A VTR with up to 4.2 MHz bandwidth), the VP-4900 (closed-circuit player for education, industry, government and medicine), and the VR-660; Jim Wheeler recounts a 1964 in-flight video project for Continental/TWA and U.S. Air Force VR-660 installations on B-52s during the Vietnam War that recorded up to six hours. The file includes production dates, model developments, awards, and discussions of specific audio recorder designs and performance.

Amy Bassin People

Donna Bassin, Ph.D., is a psychologist whose work moved from writing about loss to photography and fine‑art video exploring grief; her solo The Afterlife of Dolls was featured at Montclair Art Museum and she received the Golden Bell Leadership Award from The Mental Health Association. Amy Bassin is an artist in painting, video and interactive design; she was associate editor on SWIMMERS and editor of DOLLUMENTARY, exhibited at ARS ELECTRONICA, received grants including Artist Space and Experimental TV Center grants, and holds a BFA from School of Visual Arts.

Amy Hufnagel People

Amy Hufnagel is an artist, arts educator, historian and curator. She directed arts education programming in Albany; served as Senior Program Officer in Education at the New York Foundation for the Arts; and directed the Alice Austen House Museum in Staten Island. She taught at Syracuse University and Casanova College, received an Elizabeth Perkins Fellowship in 1991 for research on women photographers in the Piscataqua Region (1884-1910), led grant-supported regional projects, and published in Technology Review and at the Anthropology Museum at the University of California.

2000 Amy Jenkins Chronology

Amy Jenkins premiered Shelter for Daydreaming, a two-channel video installation, at the John Michael Kohler Art Center (Wisconsin) from November 12, 2000 to February 4, 2001; the work was supported by the New York State Council on the Arts (Experimental Television Center, fiscal sponsor), Finishing Funds, the Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center and the MacDowell Colony.

Amy Jenkins People

Amy Jenkins is a Brooklyn-based artist working in installations, video and photography; her work has been exhibited and published internationally. She has received support from agencies including the New York State Council for the Arts, Pollock-Krasner Foundation and Jerome Foundation, and has held residencies at Djerassi (Woodside, CA) with a Hewlett-Packard Honorary Fellowship, Harvestworks (NY), Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, MacDowell Colony, Yaddo and Light Work. Her video Closures won awards at Black Maria and the New York Exposition of Short Film and Video; her work has been shown in US and international institutions and reviewed in major art publications; she is represented by Jack Tilton/Anna Kustera Gallery, New York.

1980 An Alliance for the Media Arts in America Chronology

Founding conference for the National Alliance of Media Arts Centers held in Boulder, CO, May 29–31, 1980; conference report published by the Rocky Mountain Film Center and attended by over 130 participants. By-laws were approved establishing NAMAC's organizational structure and 17 distinct project areas were identified, including a feasibility study for a media arts center computer network and surveys of post-production and filmmaker's lab needs. The 1980–81 Board Chair was Robert Haller (Anthology Film Archives) and the Boulder conference staff Director was Virgil Grillo (Rocky Mountain Film Center); NYS member organizations included AIVF, Anthology Film Archives, Film Forum and Museum of Modern Art.

An Interview with George Stoney Interview

George C. Stoney (born 1916) is a community and media activist, film and video professor, and maker of about 40 sponsored social and educational documentaries including All My Babies (1952). He became executive producer of the National Film Board of Canada’s Challenge for Change in 1968 and pioneered half‑inch video experiments and community training (VTR‑St. Jacques; Drumheller, 1969); after returning to New York he chaired NYU’s Undergraduate Division and co‑founded the Alternate Media Center (1972). He helped design an NEA‑funded cable internship program that produced 29 interns and contributed to the founding of the National Federation of Local Cable Programmers (1976); the interview was recorded August–September 1983.
