  • Introduction to The 5th International Video Exchange Directory Collections

    The Satellite Video Exchange Society of Vancouver published an annual directory listing about 500 individuals and groups involved with small-format video; the catalog was organized internationally by region, compiled from contributor information, initially distributed free and, by 1979, subject to a minimal charge for non-listed parties. The society also published Video Guide and maintained the Video Inn library; editorial credits include Andy Harvey, Shawn Preus and Paul Wong (1977) and Mary Ready (1979), with an introduction by Paul Wong. The text outlines the society's rationale for non-commercial videotape exchange, types of exchange, copyright limitations and free circulation practices; Video Inn has 1/2" European Sony VTRs and has engaged in video exchange since 1973.

  • Acknowledgements Preservation

    Video Preservation - The Basics is a general introduction to electronic media preservation for the independent media arts community; it was researched and written by Sherry Miller Hocking of the Experimental Television Center and by artist and independent preservation consultant Mona Jimenez.   • Everson Museum Chronology

    James Harithas reported that in March 1972 the Everson Museum established what he believed was the first video department; he credited early conversations with Nam June Paik, Frank Gilette and the museum's curator of video arts, David Ross, who began planning six months earlier. Ross developed an exhibition format, a small archive, a community-oriented education program and a plan for the museum's participation in Syracuse cable TV; a donation from the Rosamond Gifford Foundation provided the department's basic hardware; source: catalog for Work from the Experimental Television Center, September 1972.

  • Assessing a Collection for Preservation Preservation

    Sarah Stauderman of the Smithsonian Institution presented an adapted Society of American Archivists matrix for prioritizing videotape collections at the Looking Back/Looking Forward symposium (May 31–June 1, 2002). She outlined a survey form with parts for identification, value assessment and risk assessment, illustrated by 1972 half-inch reel-to-reel panda research tapes; scoring combined institution value, access, legal custody, physical condition and obsolescence to produce reformatting priorities. Participants discussed formats (reel, U-matic, VHS, BetaCam, digital), cataloguing, shared custodial responsibilities and projects such as IMAP and the AMIA Moving Image Gateway.
