Al Margolis People

Al Margolis was a prime mover in the 1980s cassette underground; between 1984 and 1991 his Sound Of Pig label released over 300 cassettes by Merzbow, Costes, Amy Denio, John Hudak and Jim O'Rourke. He recorded and performed for twenty years as If, Bwana and founded the Pogus label; he also served as label manager for Deep Listening, XI Records and Mutable Music. Filmmaker Alan Berliner released the film The Sweetest Sound with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Arte France, ITVS, the Righteous Persons Foundation, the British Broadcasting Corporation, TV 1 Finland and the New York Foundation for the Arts. The film was exhibited on POV and BBC2 and screened at Visions du Reel (Switzerland), the Hirshhorn Museum (Washington), SXSW Film Festival (Austin, Texas), Taos Talking Picture Festival and the Berlin Film Festival; exhibitions included Eye and Though: Jewish Autobiography in Film and Video at the NYU Center for Media, Culture and History.

Alan Berliner is a filmmaker of experimental documentaries including Wide Awake (2006) and The Sweetest Sound (2001); his films have been broadcast internationally and featured at major festivals. His work is taught in university documentary and film history courses and held in permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art; he received Rockefeller, Guggenheim and Jerome fellowships, grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and New York arts agencies, and has won three Emmy Awards with six nominations. Alan Powell People

Alan Powell is a video artist who works collaboratively with Connie Coleman; he was an original member of the Electron Movers and has been active in the video art scene since its early days. He resides in Bucks County, PA, and is Associate Professor of Film and Media Arts at Temple University and Director of the Undergraduate Production Sequence in Film/Media Arts; his works have been shown at The Kitchen, The Alternative Museum, The Museum of Moving Image, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Long Beach Museum and the Musee d'Arte Moderne in Paris, and have been broadcast on Swiss and Danish television as well as The Learning Channel and PBS in the United States.

Alan Sondheim (born Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania) is a new-media artist, writer and theorist based in Brooklyn with B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from Brown University. His books include Being on Line: Net Subjectivity, Disorders of the Real and .echo, and his films and videos have screened internationally, including Millennium Film, New York (2008) and Brown's Interrupt Festival (2008). He co-moderates the email lists Cybermind, Cyberculture and Wryting, edited a 2001 American Book Review issue on Codework and was Trace Virtual Writer (1999). He has held residencies at Odyssey/Second Life and West Virginia University (2004, 2006) and conducts NSF-funded research at WVU on codework, avatars and virtual environments.

Albany Public Library: Video and the Library (1977) Groups

Excerpt from Videoscope 1977 reports that the Albany Public Library, central library of the Upper Hudson Library Federation of 25 libraries, planned a live public access studio to cablecast to 25,000 local subscribers; Bob Katz, APL Media Librarian, expected the Albany Community Video Project to produce most programming while using library facilities. The library acquired video equipment since 1970 (first portapak via LSCA) and received NYSCA support; LSCA-funded Adult Independent Learner Project will provide playback units. Katz considered token studio fees, noted staffing and content controversies, and hired two CETA workers to research cable and survey viewers while canvassing funding and other libraries.

Aldo Tambellini (born Syracuse, New York, 1930) trained at Scuola D'Arte Augusto Passaglia and Syracuse University (B.F.A., 1954) and earned an M.F.A. in sculpture at Notre Dame (1959); he moved to New York City in 1959 and founded Group Center, the Gate Theatre and, with Otto Piene, the Black Gate. He was an early pioneer of alternative video and won the International Grand Prix at the Oberhausen Film Festival (1969) for Black TV, now in MoMA, and organized national and international artist television broadcasts. He was a Fellow at MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies (1976–84), formed the Communicationsphere group and led numerous telecommunication and slow-scan satellite/video projects, including picturephone and international slow-scan events; his work appeared in exhibitions at MoMA, Howard Wise Gallery, documenta 6 and Bienale '83.

Alex Chechile People

Alex Chechile is a New York based artist and composer who explores sound, physiology, psychoacoustics and cognitive science through analogue modular synthesis and self‑constructed biofeedback systems (brain/nervous system). His work comprises compositions for electronics and acoustic and electro‑acoustic chamber ensembles, Internet2 telepresence performances, installations, videos and interactive stop‑motion animations. He has been supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, Harvestworks and The Experimental Television Center; his work has been presented at SIGGRAPH (San Francisco) and Tbilisi 6 Festival; he is a founding member of Pauline Oliveros' Tintinnabulate ensemble, has collaborated with Mercury Rev and holds an MFA from Rensselaer Polytechnic and a BA from Tufts University.

Alexander R. Galloway is assistant professor of Media Ecology at New York University; he previously worked for six years as Director of Content and Technology at Rhizome.org. He is a founding member of the software development group RSG, whose data surveillance system Carnivore was awarded a Golden Nica at Ars Electronica 2002, and he has written on digital media in popular and academic venues. His first book, PROTOCOL, or, How Control Exists After Decentralization, is forthcoming this year from MIT Press.

Alex Hahn, born 1954 in Rapperswil, Switzerland, is an artist who has lived in Rome, Berlin, Warsaw and New York; his practice includes video installations, computer animations, videotapes, writings, prints and a chamberdancevideoplay. He studied in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program (1981–82), was a member of Istituto Svizzero in Roma (1990) and held fellowships in Berlin (1991–94) from Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst and at Art+Com; he lived in Warsaw 1995–96.
