Alex Chechile

Alex Chechile is a New York based artist and composer whose work explores the relationships between sound, physiology, psychoacoustics, and cognitive science. His pieces are built through analogue modular synthesis and self-constructed biofeedback systems (brain/nervous system). These systems allow the implicit physiological and cognitive experience of the creative process to directly effect how the work is perceived.

Alex has been supported by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the American Embassy, Harvestworks, The Experimental Television Center, the Malcolm S. Morse Foundation, and the Ellis and Karin Chingos Award. He has performed at venues including the Orpheum Theatre (Boston), Issue Project Room (Brooklyn), The Stone (NYC), Eyebeam (NYC), MonkeyTown (Brooklyn), and the Free 103point9 Wave Farm (Acra, NY). His work has been presented at SIGGRAPH (San Francisco), The New American Art Union (Portland, OR), Tbilisi 6 Festival (Tbilisi, Georgia), Copenhagen Fest (DK), PhonoFemme (Vienna, AU), and Linoleum Festival (Moscow, RU).

Alex is one of the founding members of Pauline Oliveros' Tintinnabulate ensemble, is a collaborator with Mercury Rev, recently opened for Primus, and formerly performed with the BVG Javanese Gamelan, and the West African drum ensemble Kiniwe. Alex holds an MFA in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic and a BA in Composition and Theory from Tufts University. His oeuvre consists of compositions for electronics, acoustic and electro-acoustic chamber ensembles, Internet2 telepresence distance performances, installations, videos, and interactive stop-motion animations. He holds a BA in Music from Yale and an MA in music composition and multimedia from New York University and studied at Juilliard Pre-College; he has received grants from organizations including Experimental TV Center and ASCAP. He was a 2000 research fellow at Argonne National Laboratory, in 2003 was in residence at STEIM, and his Compound Pilot collaboration won the Classic Web Award at SXSW 2006.

  • Ron Kuivila People

    Ron Kuivila is an artist and composer who pioneered the use of ultrasound and sound sampling in live performance; his recent work explores compositional algorithms, speech synthesis and high voltage phenomena. He has collaborated with composers, artists and choreographers and has performed and exhibited installations and concerts throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. He studied with Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan and with Robert Ashley and David Behrman at Mills College; he was an NEA Fellow at Creative Associates, artist-in-residence at Media Study/Buffalo (1979-80), a 1980 CAPS recipient, and is a Professor of Musicology at Wesleyan who curated Rock's Role (After Ryoanji) at Art in General in 2004.

  • Alexis Bhagat People

    Alexis Bhagat is an intermedia artist working to dismantle authorship and authority through polyvocal sound, transmission-based conversation and continual correspondence; he is currently exploring the lecture as a form, including Lecture #4: Sound Composition as Anti-Authoritarian Writing and Lecture #5: Regarding Enemies (Bin Laden = Pope Pius VI). He edits the zine Tactical Sound and is co-editor, with Gregory Gangemi and Jason Quarles, of Sound Generation: Recording - Tradition - Politics, a collection of interviews with 21 contemporary sound artists, forthcoming from Autonomedia. He speaks and writes on anarchism, prisons and sound art, is a founding member of the August Sound Coalition, and his projects include ATM Poetry Opens (1994), Vehicle for Conversation (1999-2001), Whitman Death Songs (2002) and Lecture #2: On the Possibility of Life without the Sun (2004).
