Astria Suparak People

Astria Suparak is an artist and curator who directed the Pratt Institute Film Series (1998–2000), toured for four years with curated screenings and exhibitions, served as inaugural director of The Warehouse Gallery at Syracuse University (2006–2007) and directs Carnegie Mellon University's Regina Gouger Miller Gallery. She has curated exhibitions and screenings at institutions including Yale University School of Architecture, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and The Kitchen and has worked in England, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Italy, Ireland, Belgium and France. Her work and writing have appeared in LTTR, Black Diamond and the book Graffiti Women; she holds a bachelor's degree from Pratt Institute (2000) and pursued museum studies at Syracuse University.

Avi Weider People

Avi Zev Weider is a filmmaker who co-created the short film I REMEMBER with novelist Paul Auster in 1997; the film starred John Cameron Mitchell and premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. He founded Loop Filmworks in 1998 and produced over fifty broadcast spots for clients such as HBO; he developed a television series for IFC and was a 2008 Screenwriting fellow of the New York Foundation for the Arts. Longer-form credits include ZEROES AND ONES (pre-production) and associate-producer roles on 30TH CENTURY MAN (NY premiere at 2007 Tribeca; 2007 BAFTA nominee) and CINEMANIA (2002).

Axel Forrester People

Axel Forrester, M.F.A., has a broad education in fine arts, higher education, intermedia arts and graphic design; her work has been internationally exhibited and recognized and her company, Otherworld Productions, maintains an international clientele. She has been awarded for her work in video by the American Film Institute and is a member of Plaintext Players, a cyberspace group of artists and writers interested in the dynamics of language and creativity in cyberspace. Ayoka Chenzira People

Ayoka Chenzira is a filmmaker and media artist regarded as the first African-American woman animator and among the first to produce and direct a 35mm feature, Alma's Rainbow, which Billboard listed among top home video rentals (May 1998); her work is in collections including the Museum of Modern Art. She founded Red Carnelian Films and taught at the City college of New York, serving as Chair of Media & Communication Arts (1997–2001). She co-created the College's MFA in Media Arts Production (1995) and in 2001 accepted the William and Camille Cosby Endowed Chair of Fine Arts at Spelman College.

Aysha Quinn People

Aysha Quinn is a multi-genre artist in modeling, acting, video and performance art; in the late 1960s she modeled in New York City and in 1968 moved to Los Angeles, buying a black-and-white 1/2" reel-to-reel video portapak. She entered video art in 1975, helped establish the Utah Media Center while in Park City, Utah (1979–1983) and supported the U.S. Film & Video Festival (now Sundance), had a retrospective at VideoBrasil in Sao Paulo in 1989, and continues work on Native American issues and children's rights while residing in New York City.

Back to the Future of Television: National Center for Experiments in Television Preservation Project Progress Report Bibliography

Maria Troy and Steve Seid report a preservation project to locate, preserve and exhibit tapes from the National Center for Experiments in Television (NCET), an experimental TV lab established in 1967 at KQED with Rockefeller Foundation support; they were prompted by Brice Howard's 1972 book Videospace and scarce published material. They documented about 420 tapes in archives including Southern Methodist University, Media Study/Buffalo (now with Woody and Steina Vasulka), Stanford and UC Berkeley; SMU held multiple 2" quad tapes driven to Dallas in 1975 by former intern David Dowe, and the project plans cataloging, preservation and a touring exhibition.

Background and History Preservation

Experimental Television Center produced this guide and organized the Video History Project, documenting early video art and community television in upstate New York (1968–1980) through oral histories, a website and the Video History: Making Connections conference (Syracuse University, October 1998). The text cites Media Alliance and publications such as Deirdre Boyle's Video Preservation and the Magnetic Media Preservation Sourcebook, and notes IMAP's 1999 formation with New York State Council on the Arts and Rockefeller Foundation support. It outlines archivist functions, videotape deterioration modes and chronology of preservation activities through 2002.

Background on the BAVC Model Preservation

BAVC identified videotape deterioration and equipment obsolescence in 1992 and proceeded to develop a model remastering center, beginning remastering of skip-field and EIAJ 1/2" open reel formats in 1994; the author served as BAVC Director of Research and Development and Sally Jo Fifer was Executive Director. BAVC secured an NEA Challenge Grant in 1993 and matching support from the Andy Warhol Foundation, the San Francisco Foundation, NAMID and the California Arts Council, and acquired decks from Intermedia Arts in exchange for transfers to the Minnesota Historical Society. Staff including Debra Finucane and Grace Lan established documentation and workflow; technicians Jonathan Selsey and Heather Weaver noted a lack of ongoing R&D; technical sources cited include Ampex, 3M, Sony, Charles Bensinger's Video Guide, NASA Publication 1052 and Merlin Engineering's Ken Zhin.
