Liselot van der Heijden People

Liselot van der Heijden, born in Haarlem, Netherlands, lives and works in New York City and produces installations, videos, objects and photographs exploring control and the power of the gaze and Nature as cultural ideas. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Musée d'art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg and the New Museum. She received a fellowship from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and residencies at the Experimental Television Center; she holds a BFA (Cooper Union) and MFA (Hunter College) and joined the College of New Jersey in September 2005.

Liss Platt People

Liss Platt is a media artist working in videotapes, films, photographs, web sites, performances and installations; her work has been screened throughout the United States, Canada and Europe and in 2003 she had a retrospective at Millennium Film Workshop, New York City, and a solo exhibition and performance at Stride Gallery, Calgary. Since 1997 she has designed databases and web sites, including the database for the Magnetic Media Preservation Sourcebook, which she co-edited, and a 1999 database for Independent Media Arts Preservation. She has curated video and film programs, consulted for nonprofit media organizations, and has taught at Rutgers University and McMaster University.

Live video collectives Lord Knows Compost, 77 Hz, The Poool, Stackable Thumb, NNeng and NNeng-M are described with formation dates and personnel; Lord Knows Compost traces activity from a formation sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s and brought a dog to Experimental TV Center to create the multi-camera live video The World is my Toilet, sparking a shift to live video. Lord Knows Compost performed on the US West Coast from 1993–1995; 77 Hz held its initial meeting on January 15, 1991; The Poool formed in 1996 and collaborated with musicians and architects; NNeng (1998) produced the VHS The Vertical Hi-Way and NNeng-M resulted from a 1999 ETC residency.

Liz Phillips People

Liz Phillips, a New York-based artist, has been making interactive installations for the past thirty five years; she uses sound as primary material and detects presence and movement with capacitance radio-frequency fields, computers, a K-2000 synthesizer and C++ programs co-designed by Michael Wu to convert voltages into sound and image. Born in New Jersey in 1951, she received a B.A from Bennington College in 1973 and co-founded Parabola Arts Foundation in 1981. Her work has been shown at The Whitney, SFMOMA and Ars Electronica; she collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Liz Rodda People

Liz Rodda is a multimedia artist working primarily in single channel and installation-based film and video; her work unites politics and self, image and text, history and performance and gives voice to personal experience to contribute to a larger knowledge of the cultural climate. Her large-scale projections and installations envelop viewers in image and sound and are distinguished by their irony and simplicity. She received a BA in English Literature from Willamette University of Salem, Oregon and an MFA in Studio for Interrelated Media at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston; she currently teaches at the University of Massachusetts and maintains www.lizrodda.com.

Lloyd Fales People

Lloyd Fales is an independent television producer and documentary filmmaker with 16 years' experience; his media work focuses on explorations of science and nature and for National Geographic he produced and directed Search for the First Dog, The Crows, Street Dogs, and Tundra Swans: Tireless Voyagers. He has produced and scripted for PBS, the BBC natural history unit, and the National Audubon Society; in 2006—7 he collaborated with scientists sponsored by the National Science Foundation to produce Penguin Science (an educational DVD and website) and Return to Penguin City, which will premiere on Animal Planet this year. He has been a producer for Martha Stewart and MTV, is currently producing episodes for a new 13-part series on evolution for the History Channel, and is a 1988 graduate of Ithaca College.

Lois Welk People

Lois Welk is Artistic Director of 171 Cedar Arts Center in Corning, NY. She co-directed the American Dance Asylum from 1973 to 1979 and in 1979 joined 171 Cedar to teach Modern Dance and Creative Movement; she became Executive Director in 1988 and was named Artistic Director in 1997 during a capital campaign. She directs site-specific productions including The Parking Ramp Dances and Hiawatha Island Dance with assistance from the Experimental Television Center, has received a National Endowment for the Arts choreography fellowship and a 1998 Governor's Arts Award, and is a member of DanceForce.

2002 Looking Back/Looking Forward Chronology

Looking Back/Looking Forward was a symposium held May 31–June 1, 2002, as a working session for artists, media arts staff, conservators, and technical experts to address physical preservation of independent electronic media; it was organized by the Experimental Television Center (ETC) in association with Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP), Bay Area Video Coalition, and the Electronic Media Specialty Group of the AIC. The event was hosted by Downtown Community Television Center and made possible with public funds from the Electronic Media and Film Program of the NYS Council on the Arts, with assistance from IMAP and Dave Jones Design; it was organized by Sherry Miller Hocking and independent consultant Mona Jimenez.

Lori Zippay People

Lori Zippay is Executive Director of Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) in New York; EAI distributes an international experimental video collection and runs programs in video preservation, online resources, education, exhibitions and events. Over twenty years she curated exhibitions, lectured internationally and served on panels including the Advisory Committee for the 1995 Kwangju Biennial; she co-curated First Decade: Video from the EAI Archives at The Museum of Modern Art in 2002, edited Artists' Video: An International Guide (1992), and serves on the board of Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP).
