Laura Kurgan People

Laura Kurgan is an architect and artist and Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture at Princeton University; she holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.Arch. from Columbia and is affiliated with Laura Kurgan Architecture in New York. Her practice completed offices for WITNESS (co-founded by Peter Gabriel), and her installations have been shown internationally, including New York, September 11, 2001. Four Days Later... at ZKM, Karlsruhe (Control_Space, October 2001) and Global Clock no.2 at the Swiss National Exposition 2002. She is completing the book You Are Here; publications include Alphabet City, ANY, Archis and Assemblage; she served as an Old Dominion Faculty Fellow in Princeton's Humanities Council for the 2000–2002 academic years.

Laura McGough People

Nomads was founded by artists, curators and arts administrators to explore the cross-section of art and technology; the group views the Web as a mechanism for collective creation and dissemination of artists' work. Laura McGough is a curator, critic and media artist and co-director of NOMADS; since 1990 she has organized exhibitions internationally, published on new media, contributed to Inuit Media from Igloolik (forthcoming 1999), lectured across the US and Canada, is Multidisciplinary Specialist at the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been artist in residence at the Tariagsuk Video Centre in Igloolik and taught at the University of Maryland.

Laura Parnes People

Laura Parnes is an artist working in narrative film and video who creates non-linear narratives as site-specific installations that use stylized sets and often require audiences to enter scripted environments. She has screened and exhibited widely at institutions including the Whitney, MoMA and Museo Reina Sofia and has had solo shows in London, Miami and New York. She held residencies at Montalvo Arts Center and Wexner Center, received Finishing Funds from the Experimental Television Center and support from the New York State Council on the Arts, has taught at NYU and is Visiting Artist at Cooper Union; she earned a BFA from Tyler School of Art in 1990.

Laura Poitras People

Laura Poitras, a former chef, studied filmmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute and the New School and resides in New York City. Her film FLAG WARS (2003), a documentary about gentrification in Columbus, Ohio, received a Peabody and awards including Best Documentary at SXSW 2003, Best Documentary at the Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and the Filmmaker Award at Full Frame; it had its U.S. television premiere on PBS's P.O.V. and was nominated for 2004 Independent Spirit and Emmy Awards. Her works include OH SAY CAN YOU SEE...? (2003), EXACT FANTASY (1995), and My Country, My Country, which documents the state of democracy in Iraq and the United States in the months before the January 2005 elections.

Lauren Cornell People

Lauren Cornell is Executive Director of Rhizome and oversees the organization's programs to promote and contextualize new media art. She started with Rhizome in May 2005. Previously she worked as a curator, writer and arts administrator in New York, including on the Andy Warhol Film Project at the Whitney Museum and as Executive Director of Ocularis from 2002–2004; she also worked as a youth media educator and organizer, has been published in international and online art outlets, and has curated screenings, exhibitions and performances at venues in New York, London and Warsaw.

Lauren Petty People

Lauren Petty is a media artist and teacher working in sound, installation and film; she earned an MA in Video Art & Performance from NYU's Gallatin school in 1999 and is Chief Video Engineer at Harvestworks Media Arts Center. She teaches at The New School, the International Center of Photography and Pratt Institute and produces multiple-channel video/sound installations, single-channel works, interactive video scores and collaborative projects with The Wooster Group. Her work has been exhibited and screened at institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Brooklyn Museum; she has received grants and fellowships, including two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, and residencies at MacDowell and Yaddo.

Laurie Beth Clark People

Laurie Beth Clark was raised in New York City and holds a B.A., an M.A. in Visual Arts and an M.F.A.; since 1985 she has lived in Madison, Wisconsin, where she teaches Installation and Video and has held administrative roles. Her multidisciplinary practice uses video, performance, installation and multimedia to examine social issues; projects in Germany consider the holocaust and other genocides, and she is developing international research on trauma memorials and shopping environments. She received fellowships from Jerome and McKnight and published in anthologies such as A Performance Cosmology (Routledge, 2006).

Laurie McDonald People

Laurie McDonald studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in the early 1970s and held internships at WNET's Experimental Television Lab and the National Center for Experiments in Television; she co‑founded Electron Movers/Research in the Electronic Arts, Inc., a video co‑op active 1974–1979. In early 1980 she relocated to Houston to direct video projects for the Southwest Alternate Media Project; she received an NEA fellowship and four AFI/NEA awards and her video work has been exhibited internationally. She holds a BFA from RISD and an MA from the University of Houston.

Laurie Spiegel People

Laurie Spiegel is a composer and software designer noted for pioneering work with early electronic music systems, including the GROOVE system at Bell Telephone Laboratories, and for the software instrument Music Mouse; she founded New York Universitys Computer Music Studio. Her music has been performed and broadcast throughout the world, and she has produced and participated in several CDs. She is currently living and working in New York.

Lawrence Brose People

Lawrence Brose is an experimental film artist who has created over thirty films since 1983 and whose work has screened internationally. De Profundis is a 65-minute hand/alternative-processed film based on Oscar Wilde's prison letter with a score by Frederic Rzewski; it has screened at more than sixty venues worldwide. From 1989 he collaborated with contemporary composers in the FILM for MUSIC for FILM series and presented IMUSICIRCUS at LACMA with the California EAR Unit. MOMA included An Individual Desires Solution in Big As Life — An American History of 8mm Films, and he has placed films and career documents on deposit at the George Eastman House.

Lea Rokow People

Lea Rokow is founding director of Gigantic ArtSpace and is active in curating, publishing and programming; she works in film, video and interactive multimedia and spent the last decade living and traveling in over 50 developing countries shooting film and still photography, from which she produced ethnographic projects shown internationally. She was previously director of Harmonic Ranch, a new media studio in TriBeCa, and director of media programs at the Center for Peace and Human Security; she has taught video at Pratt Institute in Manhattan, performed with Emergency Broadcast Network, and produced new media for Simon and Schuster Interactive. She holds a Master's degree in film and digital media; www.learekow.com.

Leah Gilliam People

Leah Gilliam (b. 1967, Washington, DC) is a video and new-media artist and Associate Professor of Film and Electronic Arts at Bard College. She studied at Brown (B.A.) and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (M.F.A.) and presented her first solo museum exhibition, Agenda for a Landscape, at the New Museum in 2002. Her video Apeshit was named one of Film Comment's Best of 1999 and Sapphire and the Slave Girl won the New Visions Video Award; her projects received funding from Creative Capital and New York State Council on the Arts.

Lee Krist People

Lee Krist presented solo exhibitions 2000–2004 at venues including Brooklyn Babylon Cinema, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Cal Arts, San Francisco Cinematheque and Reed College; participated in group exhibitions 1998–2003 at venues including The Robert Beck Memorial Cinema, Mix and PENUMBRA. Krist's filmography (1997–2003) comprises 16 mm and 35 mm hand-processed works and installations including Grieg Farm, August 1997, Greenpoint, The Portland Movie and the Big Film Series; the Tableaux Vivant installation used 35 mm strips illuminated by 16 mm projected loops. Krist led workshops at Bard College, Lift Film Cooperative, Northwest Film Center and Reed College; awards include a Black Maria Director's Citation and Finishing Funds 2004; education: B.A., Bard College, May 1999, concentration in Film Production.

Lee Montgomery People

Lee Montgomery holds a BA in Film from Bard College and an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute; he founded Neighborhood Public Radio and received grants from CEC Artslink, the Creative Work Fund, and the Walter and Elise Haas Fund. He served as an artist in residence with kuda in Novi Sad, Serbia and the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in Hamburg; Neighborhood Public Radio was named Best Super Local Radio Station by San Francisco magazine and was featured in The San Francisco Chronicle, Punk Planet, Artforum, the Chicago Reader, and Women's Wear Daily. In 2008 NPR completed a 4 month storefront residency next to the Whitney Museum as part of the 2008 Whitney Biennial; Montgomery's solo project Broadcast Version addresses D.I.Y. technology and copyright law.
