Greg Berger People

Greg Berger is a filmmaker and professor of video who produces award-winning documentaries on grassroots social movements in Mexico and the Americas and has made experimental short narratives on Revolutionary Tourism. He coordinates the Dispatches From America Rebelde tour, bringing Latin American social-justice documentaries to United States universities and community centers with moderated virtual town meetings between US audiences and activists in Mexico and Bolivia; his work has screened on six continents. His 2004 short GringotÛn received the Latin American Studies Association Award for Merit in Film.

Greg Bordowitz People

Greg Bordowitz is Associate Professor of Film, Video, and New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; he studied at New York University, the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program (NY), and the School of Visual Arts (NY), and holds a concurrent faculty position at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. His exhibitions and screenings include The Gene Siskel Film Center (Chicago), the New York Jewish Film Festival, PBS broadcast, the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), the Sundance Film Festival, and the Whitney Biennial (NY); his awards include a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, Jerome Foundation Grant, Art Matters Grant, New York State Council for the Arts Distribution Grant, Banff Centre for the Arts Residency, and Rockefeller Intercultural Film/Video Arts Fellowship.

Greg Bowman People

Greg Bowman holds a BA in Theater Arts from Cornell University and a Masters from Renssalear Polytechnic Institute; he worked as Assistant Access Coordinator for PEGASYS in Ithaca, NY, and taught computer graphics at the New York State Summer School of the Arts. Since 1990 he has produced and edited OffLine, a cable access series airing in over 30 U.S. cities; his practice includes music and audio, digital video and interactive new media, and he has received support from NYSCA and the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Gregory Whitehead People

Gregory Whitehead is a writer, audio artist and director of sea-crow media who produced over fifty radio features, voice works and earplays for programs in the United States and abroad; his productions include Dead Letters and Pressures of The Unspeakable (Prix Italia, 1992). He co-edited Wireless Imagination: Sound, Radio and the Avant-Garde (MIT Press), published essays on language, technology and the public, and received the Prix Futura/BBC Award for New Hörspiel; Dead Letters was selected for the Whitney Museum's American Century show.

Greta Olafsdottir and Susan Muska People

Susan Muska is a freelance cameraperson and producer of social-issue and public-health documentaries; she graduated from Duke University in 1981 and holds an MA from New York University. Greta Olafsdottir is a professional photographer in fashion and fine arts with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts (1988) and a BA in Women's Studies from the New College of California. They collaborated on The Brandon Teena Story (Best Documentary, 1988 Berlin Film Festival), which inspired Boys Don't Cry; their film Women, The Forgotten Face of War examines postwar experiences of ordinary women and has received foundation support.

Gretchen Bender People

Gretchen Bender was a film and video artist associated with young 1980s artists who used appropriated photographic sources, including Jack Goldstein, Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo and Richard Prince; she produced socially conscious mixed-media works often using multiple video monitors and film screens with loud music scores. Her first New York gallery show was at Nature Mode in the East Village in 1983; she later showed at Metro Pictures and designed the credits for the TV show America's Most Wanted and directed music videos for Babes in Toyland. She designed sets for Bill T. Jones and Molissa Fenley; in 1991 the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse mounted a traveling midcareer retrospective of her work. She died in New York in 2005 at age 53.

Gretchen Skogerson People

Gretchen Skogerson is a video and installation artist who studied contemporary art history and cinema studies; she produces The American Disaster Series, a group of experimental videos and sculptures focused on retelling contemporary disasters. Her work has been shown at the Whitney Biennial, the New York Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, PA; she is an associate professor in the Film/Video Department at Massachusetts College of Art and maintains a website at www.gretchenskogerson.com.

Gretjen Clausing People

Gretjen Clausing worked for over 18 years in independent media exhibition; from 1999 to 2004 she was program director of Film at the Prince, where she created and ran a repertory film program, and in fall 2004 she joined Scribe Video Center as program director and producer of the 2005 National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture Conference. She served as coordinator of the Philadelphia Independent Film/Video Association, was filmmaker/facilitator on two Scribe Video Center community visions projects and publicist for the inaugural year of Street Movies. She cocreated and produced the television series Big Tea Party, aired on DUTV since January 1999 and on Free Speech TV since 2004; she graduated from Ithaca College in 1986.

Groups

The media field began evolving in the 1960s with the introduction of portable videotape technology, increased public support for arts and humanities projects, and the radical counter-cultural movement; New York State hosted early media activity in the United States, with over thirty media organizations active in the upstate region during 1968-1980. Groups operated with organizational strategies ranging from individual to collective; media makers produced documentaries, narratives, conceptual and image-processed video work for cable and television and for regional, community and art venues.
