Video Conference Held at Albany Bibliography
Educational Communication Centers and the Television Arts convened Nov. 21–22 at SUNY Albany; Gerald O'Grady, director of the Center for Media Study at SUNY Buffalo, coordinated and William Mulvey, director of SUNY Albany's Educational Communications Center, hosted. The program combined theoretical presentations and technical demonstrations, including O'Grady's Three Universes of Media; works by Mulvey and the Vasulkas; a video-synthesizer demonstration at Binghamton; and a funding panel with representatives from NYSCA, NEH and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Laddy Kite is coordinator of the Visual Studies Workshop Media Center.

Video Freex: Summary of Activities and Videotapes (1997) Groups
Video Freex was a collective active from 1969 that produced community television and video resources; members included Skip Blumberg and Nancy Cain. They worked in New York City and with the Rochester Museum and Science Center in 1970 with NYSCA support, and from 1971–79 operated a low-power community TV station in Lanesville broadcasting Lanesville TV. Media Bus ran workshops and exhibitions, maintained over 300 tapes, published technical material including Spaghetti City Video Manual and Dumpling Ground vol.2, provided access to two portable color cameras supported by NYSCA, and in 1979 members moved to Woodstock to run a post-production facility; contact Video Data Bank.

Video History Conference: Making Connections (1998)
Video History: Making Connections took place October 16–18, 1998 at Syracuse University alongside the Common Ground Conference, sponsored by the New York State Alliance for Arts Education; it paired 1970s media makers with contemporary new-media artists and drew over 250 attendees. Programming included a reception at the Everson, a keynote by David Ross (Director, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), the Ausprobieren performance, panels on video history and practice, Extended Play screenings by more than 20 organizations and an Open Screening; a Resource Room exhibited early analog and digital tools and continuous viewing of Pioneers of Electronic Art curated by Woody and Steina Vasulka (Ars Electronica, 1992).

Video History: Making Connections convened October 16-18, 1998 at Syracuse University in conjunction with the Common Ground Conference; it brought together over 250 media makers active in the 70s and artists working in new media and interactive technologies. The conference was sponsored by the New York State Alliance for Arts Education; funding and support came from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts Technology Planning Grant Program, public funds from the Statewide Challenge Grant Program and the New York State Council on the Arts, the Everson Museum of Art, the Media Action Grant Program of Media Alliance, corporate donors Dave Jones Design and VidiPax, and individual contributors.

Events for Video History: Making Connections and Common Ground took place October 16–17, 1998, including an Everson Museum reception showing Janet Biggs' Water Training and works by Carrie Mae Weems, Bill Viola, Paik, Tony Oursler, Les Levine, Gary Hill and Skip Blumberg. David Ross, former Everson curator and museum director, spoke to the conferences. Performances on October 17 included AUSPROBIEREN with Peer Bode, Pauline Oliveros (video), Steina Vasulka, Andrew Deutsch and Tony Conrad; additional programs included ArtVideoDance, Extended Play screenings organized by Tara Mateik, a Resource Room organized by Pamela Susan Hawkins, a display of early electronic tools organized by Peer Bode and colleagues, and a call for contributions to a Constructing Video Histories website.

Panels on Saturday, October 17, 1998, under Video History: Making Connections covered early digital photography, writing about video, tool development and restoration, distribution and teaching video history. The Pioneers of Digital Photography session related to an Open Space Gallery exhibition in Allentown, PA, in summer 1998 co-sponsored with Light Work. Presenters included Mary Ross; Paul Ryan; Jim Lindner (President, VidiPax), who traced magnetic materials from wire recording to the present; and representatives of DCTV, Paper Tiger TV and KAKO discussing activist video.
Video History: Making Connections - Seminars
Video Rewind: A Seminar on Early Video History (October 16, 1998) was a day-long seminar introducing curators, critics, librarians, archivists, funders, artists and students to independent video in America (1965–1980); it offered screenings, lectures and discussions on video art, documentary tapes and topics such as portapaks, closed-circuit video, collectives and cable TV. Seminar leader Deirdre Boyle (The New School) presented alongside Barbara London (Curator of Video, MoMA), Paul Ryan (McLuhan fellow) and Parry Teasdale (Videofreex). A full-day Video Preservation session, co-sponsored and organized by Media Alliance and Mona Jimenez, gathered representatives to report on preservation initiatives and funding trends.
