Randy Bell People

Randy Bell is a New York-based independent filmmaker whose documentary films examine American popular music, mid-century European modernist architecture, and the AIDS orphan crisis in Kenya; his films have won awards from the Cleveland International Film Festival, the New England Film and Video Festival, and the Ivy Film Festival and have been honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the African Studies Association, and Harvard University. His work has screened at film festivals, independent movie theaters, and universities internationally; he has received major grant support from the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Flora Family Foundation, the Wellspring Foundation, the Pannonia Foundation, the Strauss Foundation, and the O'Reilly Foundation.

Raphaele Shirley People

Raphaele Shirley is a New York City–based artist specializing in public art and collaborative interventions; [PAM] is her most recent collaboration and she showed in Two Continents and Beyond for the 9th Istanbul Biennale. She worked with Nam June Paik on the development and management of his laser sculptures (1997-2002) and collaborated with Eliot Sharp, Alex Haas and Brian Eno; she was a founding member of the New York International Fringe Festival and invited visual artists, performers and undergraduates (Pratt Univ.) to install temporary public art in the Lower East Side. She produced projects including the experimental club Show World in Times Square and Between Dreams by Shimone Attie and Creative Time, and studied fine arts at the Beaux Arts d'Aix-en-Provence, France; website http://www.raphaeleshirley.com.

Rashaad Newsome People

Rashaad Newsome is an interdisciplinary artist working with videos, performances, sculptures and photographs that interrogate notions of cultural/social signifiers. He was born in New Orleans and lives and works in New York City; he will use his fellowship to create the next version of Shade Compositions. Raster Manipulation Unit: Operation and Construction Tools

Raster Manipulation Unit: Operation and Construction (1980) documents a prepared-television modification that adds extra yokes to a conventional black-and-white CRT and drives them with audio or function generators; the technique permits raster reversal, raster collapse to a line or point, S-curve distortions and other deformations, and uses optical rescanning to record the effects. System configuration lists a modified receiver/monitor with raster reversal and collapse functions, one stereo and one mono amplifier and three audio generators; added yokes include a color yoke and a continuous-wind (S-curve) yoke. Signal examples include sine, square and triangle waveforms, Lissajous patterns and frequency guidelines; Nam June Paik is cited as having popularized the modifications.
