Introduction Preservation

Looking Back/Looking Forward is a symposium on electronic media preservation organized by the Experimental Television Center; it invited 58 artists, conservators, media arts staff and technical experts and is an activity of the Center’s Video History Project (begun 1994). The Video History Website (launched 2000) hosts nine interrelated databases with about 3,500 records and a Bibliography of over 1,000 entries. The Preservation area includes the commissioned papers Video Preservation and Reel to Real; Bay Area Video Coalition, with NEA funding, will produce a DVD due end of 2002.

Introduction to The 5th International Video Exchange Directory Collections

The Satellite Video Exchange Society of Vancouver published an annual directory listing about 500 individuals and groups involved with small-format video; the catalog was organized internationally by region, compiled from contributor information, initially distributed free and, by 1979, subject to a minimal charge for non-listed parties. The society also published Video Guide and maintained the Video Inn library; editorial credits include Andy Harvey, Shawn Preus and Paul Wong (1977) and Mary Ready (1979), with an introduction by Paul Wong. The text outlines the society's rationale for non-commercial videotape exchange, types of exchange, copyright limitations and free circulation practices; Video Inn has 1/2" European Sony VTRs and has engaged in video exchange since 1973.

Introduction to The Frontier 1979-1980 Bibliography

The Frontier is a series of 16 programs featuring work by 30 independent film and video makers from Buffalo and Western New York and from Toronto and Southern Ontario, produced by Media Study/Buffalo and broadcast by WNED-TV Channel 17. Lynn Corcoran is named as producer and is said to have selected and assembled the programs. Publication of the tabloid was funded by a Canada Council grant to the Toronto Super‑Eight Film Festival, and program support came from the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and WNED membership.

2000 Irit Batsry Chronology

Irit Batsry produced the video These Are Not My Images (neither there nor here) during a residency at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne; the production was in association with La Sept/ARTE and supported by the Department of Fine Arts (French Ministry of Culture). The work was made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, The Experimental TV Center, Central St. Martins College of Arts (London), Grand Canal (Paris) and The Lux Center (London); soundtrack by Stuart Jones; runtime 80 minutes (2000), mastered on D1 and available in 35 MM, Digital Betacam and BetacamSP.

2002 Irit Batsry Chronology

On March 28, 2002, Whitney Museum of American Art director Maxwell L. Anderson announced that Irit Batsry (b. Israel, 1957) will receive the second Bucksbaum Award, a $100,000 prize and artist-in-residency given every two years to an artist working in the United States. Batsry's THESE ARE NOT MY IMAGES was produced during a residency at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, in association with La Sept/ARTE and with support from the Department of Fine Arts (French Ministry of Culture). Panel with Joel Chadabe (Electronic Music Foundation), Alain Depocas (Daniel Langlois Foundation) and Woody Vasulka addressed preservation of media art performances, installations and digital works, focusing on digitization, emulation and documentation. They gave examples: Chadabe cited Luigi Nono and John Cage’s Bird Cage; Vasulka described scanning and OCR of about thirty thousand pages (Czech Republic contract ~$1,900, outputs RTF and TIF/PDF); Depocas summarized the Daniel Langlois documentation centre (open October 2000), its bilingual relational database, recent acquisitions and a Guggenheim partnership on the Variable Media questionnaire and emulation case studies.

Istvan Kantor, also known as Monty Cantsin and founder of Neoism, is a Hungarian-born media artist and producer working in performance, robotics, installation, sound, music, video and new media; his recent work examines the impact of new technology on the human body and the socio-mechanical interactions of information systems. His work has been exhibited internationally and has received the Telefilm Canada Award for Best Canadian Video (1998), the Transmediale 2001 award in Berlin, and the Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts in 2004. He lives and works in Toronto.
