  13. Community Video Project: Descriptions (1972, 1977) Groups

    Community Video Project, founded in New Paltz, NY, counted Steven Kolpan among its founding members and produced a one-hour cable show, Community Mix, on Channel 12 in the early 1970s; New Paltz had about 7,500 residents at that time. CVP promoted grassroots community programming focused on individuals and civic affairs and opposed commercialization and commercials on Channel 12. Kolpan listed videotapes for purchase and exchange documenting video feedback, video distortion, oscilloscope images and audio experimentation; Captain Video in New Paltz distributed tapes on new and old technologies. The group was profiled in Radical Software V2 N1 (1972) and cited in Jonathan Price, Video Visions: A Medium Discovers Itself (1972, 1977).

    Introduction traces community video to the late sixties and notes the author's almost eight years of involvement in New York City and Woodstock; interviews were recorded in the Woodstock area. The record contains three interviews: Val Cadden, Woodstock Town Supervisor, describes the town-designated cable channel opened in May, 1972, access by town board permission, WCV programming and its suspension last fall for lack of local funding and a roughly $1,700 franchise fee; Judi Mills, a recent Vassar graduate, discusses 1/2-inch videotape practice and networking videotaped social-service information to Mid-Hudson cable systems; Jon Berg, a Woodstock sculptor, reports minimal viewer response and limited community participation.

  17. Components of the Remastering System Preservation

    BAVC catalogs the components and signal flow of its remastering system, listing playback machines (two AV-8650s, CV-2100, BVU-800), a Sony BVT-810 16-line TBC and a DPS full-frame TBC with DPS Vscope, a six-in/one-out video switcher and a one-in/six-out video distribution amplifier, waveform monitor/vectorscope and a color monitor with cross-pulse. Color bars and a 1 kHz tone are recorded for about one minute at the head of transferred tapes as references for color and audio levels; bars set hue, saturation, brightness and black level and tone sets audio VU calibration. The setup uses a Sigma switcher and VDA, a control-room video and audio patchbay, and routing that permits viewing signals pre- and post-TBCs to select the optimal transfer path.

  23. Computer Animation Systems GRASS and ZGRASS Tools

    Dan Sandin arrived at the University of Illinois in 1971 and developed the Sandin Image Processor; Tom DeFanti joined shortly after and developed the Graphics Symbiosis System (GRASS) during his PhD. They formed the Circle Graphics Habitat at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, where GRASS ran on hardware including a Vector General CRT, a PDP-11 and the Sandin Image Processor; the system was purchased by the UICC Chemistry Department and received funding from organizations including NSF and the Carnegie Corporation. In 1978 the Z Box project produced ZGRASS, a Z-80 Bally-based 3D system with NTSC output that DeFanti attempted to commercialize through Real Time Design, Inc.; a ZGRASS device was presented at Video History: Making Connections, 1998.
