Steve Bull People

Steve Bull is a mixed-media technology artist who writes computer code, records audio interviews and shoots video to create location-specific experiences delivered via cell phones; he is commissioned by the New-York Historical Society to create a cell phone tour of Lower Manhattan for the Slavery in New York exhibits, with the first segment launching in February 2006. Cellphonia received funding from the New York State Council for the Arts and ETC and was a Creative Capital finalist; his projects have been exhibited at The Getty, the Museum of Modern Art, the American Film Institute, PBS and Creative Time.

Steve Dietz People

Steve Dietz is Director of the ISEA 2006 Symposium and ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge, taking place in August 2006 in San Jose, California; he is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2005 he co-curated Database Imaginary at the Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff, Canada, where he is curatorial fellow; he curated the web projects for the exhibition Making Things Public at ZKM, Karlsruhe, curated by Bruno Latour and Peter Weibel; with Sarah Cook he co-curated The Art Formerly Known as New Media, which opened at the Walter Philips Gallery in September 2005; website www.yproductions.com.

Steve Lambert People

Steve Lambert, born in Los Angeles in 1976 and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2000) and an MFA from UC Davis (2006); his parents were a former Franciscan monk and a Dominican nun who left the church before his birth. He founded the outdoor guerrilla Budget Gallery (1999) and the Anti-Advertising Agency (2004); his projects have won awards and his work has been shown nationally and internationally. Steve Pierce People

Steve Pierce is a long-time media activist who worked on cable franchise renewals in the sixty communities comprising the New York State Capital Region; he helped organize the Hudson Mohawk Independent Media Center and has been involved with grassroots community radio for the past 25 years. He was executive director of the Deep Dish TV Network, assistant manager of the Pacifica Foundation's WBAI in NYC, and program director of WWOZ in New Orleans; his academic work focuses on media and democracy and he received an MS and PhD from the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Steve Reich People

Steve Reich is an American composer whose work ranges from taped speech pieces It's Gonna Rain (1965) and Come Out (1966) to the digital video opera Three Tales (2002); his music draws on Western Classical, non-Western and American vernacular traditions, particularly jazz. Different Trains (1988) uses speech recordings as musical material and earned Reich the 1990 Grammy for Best Contemporary Composition as recorded by the Kronos Quartet on Nonesuch; he won a second Grammy in 1999 for Music for 18 Musicians. In 2000 Musical America named him Composer of the Year; Three Tales, made with video artist Beryl Korot, was released on CD and DVD by Nonesuch in August 2003.

Steve Reinke People

Steve Reinke was born in 1963 and received an MFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1993; his work has been screened at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1996), the Art Gallery of Ontario (1996) and at many international venues. He has curated The George Kuchar Experience and XYZ/Pleasure Dome and co-edited By the Skin of the Tongue: Artist Video Scripts; he has received support from the Canada Council and the Toronto Arts Council. His work is distributed by V Tape and Videographe.

Steve Seid People

Steve Seid is the video curator at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, CA; he pursues video preservation and writes on electronic media. He was co-curator of the Ant Farm retrospective currently touring the U.S. and Europe, staged the first live PowerPoint competition, and is co-editing a book with accompanying exhibition on the 50-year history of San Francisco avant-garde media.

Storage Guidelines Preservation

Practical guidelines for short-term storage of videotapes recommend access storage at 60–73?F and 20–30% RH and advise lower temperatures for archival storage; access conditions are expected to keep tapes usable for ten years and fluctuations should be limited (no more than 7?F and 5–20% RH). The document advises monitoring temperature and humidity, allowing tapes to equilibrate before playback, choosing windowless, well-insulated rooms without carpets or food, using grounded metal shelving, storing tapes upright, avoiding magnetic fields, and storing duplicates separately. 2004 Strengthening the Media Arts in NYS Chronology

Statewide Media Arts Convening and NAMAC Regional Meeting organized in partnership by Experimental Television Center, WAMC and the Electronic Media and Film Program of the New York State Council on the Arts; about 30 media arts and advocacy groups from around New York State were invited. The program included one day of discussion on issues of critical interest to the communities and a second day devoted to one of four NAMAC think tank meetings held across the country each year.

Su Friedrich People

Su Friedrich began filmmaking in 1978 and has produced and directed thirteen 16mm films and videos; with the exception of Hide and Seek she is credited as writer, director, cinematographer, sound recordist and editor. Her films have won festival awards including Athens, Outfest '97 and Melbourne and have been the subject of retrospectives at MoMA, the Whitney and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. She received fellowships and grants including Guggenheim (1989), Rockefeller (1990), DAAD artist-in-residence (1984) and an Alpert Award (1996); her work is held by MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Centre Pompidou and is distributed by Outcast Films and Canyon Cinema.
