Steina Vasulka People

Steina Vasulka (born 1940, Reykjavik) is an artist who since the mid-1970s has explored transformations of vision, space and sound through digital technologies and mechanical devices; her work includes the Machine Vision series (begun 1975) and Voice Windows (1986). She collaborated with Woody Vasulka in the early 1970s, studied at the Music Conservatory in Prague (1959–63) and emigrated to the United States in 1965. She performs with a violin that digitally generates projected images, has exhibited at Centre Georges Pompidou and Whitney Biennial, and lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Stepahnie Maxwell People

Stephanie Maxwell is co-founder and co-director of the ImageMovementSound festivals and teaches film, video and animation production and history in the School of Film and Animation at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has taught, lectured and conducted workshops internationally and was an artist-in-residence at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand. Her award-winning animated works have exhibited in international film and television programs and festivals, including retrospectives in New Zealand, the Ottawa International Animation Festival, LUX in London and the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles in Paris; her works are collected by museums as works of art.

Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock People

Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock holds an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and a BA from Hampshire College; he is Assistant Professor of Photography and Graphic Design at Fordham University and has taught at School of Visual Arts, Parsons and the School of Fine Arts in Boston. He has received awards from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, CEPA Gallery and Visual Studies Workshop. His work has been exhibited in White Hot, Uprising at VideoSpace Gallery, the Short Attention Span Festival and venues including CEPA Gallery, the Contemporary Museum of Baltimore and the Whitney Museum; it has been published in CEPA Journal and Artvoice.

Stephan Moore People

Stephan Moore is a composer, audio artist and sound designer based in Brooklyn and Troy, New York; he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Western Michigan University and Interlochen Arts Academy. His practice focuses on collection and use of real-world sound, creation and perception of sonic environments and technological manifestations of improvisation and interactivity; he worked in the Experimental Television Center Residency Program and uses a large multi-channel array of hand-built hemispherical speakers in performances and installations. He performs as half of the electronic duo Evidence, has created custom music software and taught courses at Maryland Institute College of Art, Peabody Conservatory, Massachusetts College of Art, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Simon's Rock College of Bard; he is currently Sound Supervisor of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Stephanie Gray is a filmmaker-poet whose super 8 films have screened internationally; she has received support from NYFA and NYSCA and has presented one-woman shows at the MIX Lesbian & Gay Experimental Film Fest monthly series, Millennium Film Workshop and Thaw. Her work has screened at festivals including TIE, Ann Arbor, Oberhausen, Viennale, VIDEOEX, Cinematexas, Outfest and Frameline; her film Dear Joan is distributed by Frameline. She has performed city films with live poetry, including a featured show in the Poetry Project's late night Friday series, and her first poetry collection, Heart Stoner Bingo, was published in 2007 by Straw Gate Books.

Stephanie Rothenberg works in performance, video and net-based media to create interactive situations that question relationships among individuals, identities, lifestyles and public spaces; she references corporate models and merges advertising and market-research formats with participatory role-playing and fantasy. Her work has been exhibited in the US and abroad, including ISEA 2004 (Helsinki) and venues in New York City, Montreal, Bremen, Chicago and North Adams, Massachusetts; she commutes between New York City and Buffalo, is Assistant Professor of Communication Design at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Stephen Beck People

Stephen Beck, born in Chicago (1950) and educated at the University of Illinois at Urbana and the University of California, Berkeley, worked in the electronic music studio at Urbana and became involved with Experiments in Art and Technology. He built his first video synthesizer in 1968, developed the Beck Direct Video Synthesizer (circa 1970–72) and the Video Weaver (1974), and produced Video Weavings (1976); his instruments combined analog circuitry and early digital logic gate chips. He was artist-in-residence at NCET (1970–73), formed Beck - Tech and other consulting firms, and lives in Berkeley as president of Electron Video Creations; his work is available from Video Data Bank and Electronic Arts Intermix.

Stephen Partridge is a media artist and producer who exhibited in 1970s shows including the Serpentine (Video Show, 1975), the Tate gallery (Installation Show, 1976), the Paris Biennale (1977) and The Kitchen, New York (1979). He worked with composer David Cunningham from 1974; Channel 4 commissioned Dialogue for Two Players (1984); with Jane Rigby he formed Fields and Frames and produced Television Interventions (Channel 4, 1990), featuring nineteen artist works including his The Sounds of These Words, and he co-produced Not Necessarily for BBC2 with BBC Scotland (1991). He has curated Video Art 78 and touring tape packages and is Professor of Media Art and Head of School at the School of Television and Imaging, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, University of Dundee, where he established the Television Workshop.

Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist who explores sound’s physical properties to shape spaces; his exhibitions include Galerie Almine Rech (Paris) and the 2002 Whitney Biennial. In 1999 he held a 6-month WorldViews residency on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center that produced a site-specific sound installation; his releases include Scratchy Monsters and he composed music for White Oak Dance Project’s See Through Knot at BAM. He made new media for SFMOMA with the Walker and ZKM, coauthored Dia’s CD-ROM Fantastic Prayers, and is Assistant Professor of Kinetic Imaging at VCU and Archivist for The Kitchen, NYC.
