Media Equipment Pool at the Rochester Museum and Science Center: Program (1971) Groups

Funded by NYSCA, the Media Equipment Pool at the Rochester Museum and Science Center provided portable video equipment to local artists and community organizations and was separated from the museum by 1972 to become a program of the Portable Channel. Coordinator Bonnie Klein reported loaning equipment to over 50 groups and acquiring Sony 1/2" Porta Paks and editing support systems; the Pool lobbied for community access cable, sought a tape distribution system and began a library of edited tape; statement dated October 14, 1971 to Ralph Hocking.

Media Formats Update Panel Preservation

Mona Jimenez and Steina Vasulka presented Media Formats Update at the Experimental Television Center symposium Looking Back/Looking Forward on May 31–June 1, 2002; they surveyed tape and deck durability, signal characteristics, format obsolescence and reformatting cycles. The panel discussed specific formats (Beta SP, SVHS, mini-DV, DvCam, DVC Pro, the D family including D-1, Beta SX), optical media and DVDs, and addressed cleaning, playback problems, compression, digitization workflows, server storage and retrieval; BAVC, Visual Studies Workshop and the Grand Rapids Community Media Center were referenced.

Media Independents Push for Access Bibliography

Independent video and film producers increased political organizing to gain programming and funding access; AIVF lobbied the Corporation for Public Broadcasting during its reorganization after the Carnegie Commission report and advocated a clear definition of independents and Program Fund set-asides. A dispute at WNET-Channel 13 over four peer-panel-selected films produced the Coalition To Make Public Television Public, meetings with president Jay Iselin on Feb. 11 and a protest at Lincoln Center on Feb. 24, and scrutiny of station finances. Independent feature filmmakers formed the Independent Feature Project (director Joy Pereths) after a New York Film Festival market (Sept. 1979); national organizing includes a Minnewaska meeting (April 1979) leading to a NAMAC conference in Boulder (May 29–31).

Media Ithaca: Description of Programs (1997, 1998) Groups

Media Ithaca was formed after an Upstate Media Conference in Ithaca in spring 1987 and operated as a community forum to encourage independent media work; NYSCA supported a Coordinator for the Central New York Programmers Group and the office was housed at Ithaca College. The organization was initially a program of Cornell Cinema in 1988 and received support and services from Ithaca College School of Communications. In the early 1990s it awarded small grants (program begun 1991), organized a summer Film and Video Festival (begun 1990), hosted workshops including an Amiga workshop, and presented screenings and discussions by Cheryl Dunye, Craig Baldwin and Wilhelm Hein; leadership changes occurred in 1993–1994 and Media Ithaca was disbanded in 1994, with the Regrant program administered by Cornell Cinema.

2002 Media Preservation Salon Chronology

Media Preservation Salon was hosted by NAMAC and facilitated by Jim Hubbard and Mona Jimenez; the program assembled a panel of preservation practitioners. Panelists listed include Sherry Miller Hocking (Experimental Television Center), Karan Sheldon (Northeast Historic Film), Toni Treadway (International Center for 8mm Film), Stepen Vitiello (The Kitchen) and Heather Weaver (Bay Area Video Coalition).
