Taka Iimura Interview Interview
Taka Iimura, a Japanese film and video artist who spent more than ten years in the United States, discusses his practice and the independent film/video scene in Japan; his early work includes Junk (Standard 8, 1962) and later pieces include Line A,B,C,D,E (1972, revised 1980), Talking in New York and Talking Picture, and he screened work at gallery 360 in December 1982. Taka Iimura's "I=YOU=HE/SHE" Bibliography
Taka Iimura's I=YOU=HE/SHE was shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art, June 5–17, 1979; it used live image and delayed replay to turn the monitor into a mirror that displaces space and time and renders the present into past and future tenses. Iimura treated videotape and the television monitor as generators of language and explored this approach in installations REGISTER YOURSELF and FACE TO FACE and in the single-channel tape SELF IDENTITY. He framed video as a semiotic ideogram to investigate self, perception and Derridean deconstruction.

Talking to Myself: Phenomenological Operation Bibliography
Takahiko Iimura created the videotape series Talking to Myself: Phenomenological Operation (1978) and exhibited one tape as an installation in 1979; the work is based on a sentence by Jacques Derrida from Speech and Phenomena, and Other Essays on Husserl's Theory of Signs (translated by David B. Allison). Iimura records himself with synchronized, dubbed and erased audio to produce splits between the speaking I and the hearing I, including a silent voice and a circular phrasing in piece no. 2; the installation plays material on two tapes across two monitors with four speakers using time-shifting and overlap. Program entry from De Appel Gallery, Amsterdam, 1980.
