Ed Mellnik People

Ed Mellnik is a video artist and owner of EMA Video Productions in Portland, Oregon; from 1970 he produced installations and live video performances including A Boob in a Tube/A Nixon Video Ride (SUNY Buffalo, 1970), Emit-Non-Time (SUNY Buffalo, 1974, with Allen Pierce), and Vertical Hold (SW Oregon Museum of Science, 1977). He exhibited work at the US Embassy in Mexico City (1975), Open Gallery Eugene (1979) and NW Artists Workshop Portland (1980), received an Oregon Arts Commission Fellow Grant (1980) and presented at the Portland Art Museum (1983). In 1983–84 he co-created the Chromatizer colorizer with engineer Arlie Conner (seven units built), and in 2002 Oregon Public Broadcasting aired a scenic shot and edited in high definition by Mellnik.

Ed Mellnik People

Ed Mellnik earned a BA from SUNY Buffalo in 1973 and from 1974 onward has produced short video works and interactive sculptural installations; his early work was made at the Experimental Television Center in New York State. He received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and was an Oregon Arts Commission Fellow, and several short works were broadcast on KQED with programs aired on The Discovery Channel. He taught computer animation at the NW Film Center, served as artist in residence in Oregon schools, and since 1985 has led EMA Video Productions, Inc., producing animation, TV commercials and corporate training videos for Northwest companies; selected installations include A Boob in a Tube (SUNY Buffalo, 1973) and Backfeed (1974).

Ed Osborn People

Ed Osborn is a sound and media artist whose installations, sculpture, radio, video, performance and public projects use kinetic and audible systems to explore space, aurality and motion. He has performed, exhibited, lectured and held residencies across the Americas, Europe and Australia and received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Creative Work Fund, Arts International and Meet the Composer. Residencies include DAAD Artists‑in‑Berlin and Banff Centre; exhibitions include ZKM, Berkeley Art Museum and MassMOCA; he teaches in Brown Universitys Visual Arts Department and is represented by Catharine Clark Gallery.

Ed Tomney People

Ed Tomney is a composer and visual artist who produced early synthesist projects including The Last Gasp Ensemble and the electronic trio ENVLP; he later developed larger works such as The Mechanical Guitar Orchestra, a robotic ensemble of automated electric guitar sculptures for installation and performance. He composed a series of radio works in Europe (Kunstradio-Radiokunst; Bilder Im Kopf — ORF) and exhibited sound installations in public passage spaces including stairwells, elevators, subway stations and hallways. His solo series Ecotype Transmissions combines reanimated spatial events with live mechanical elements such as motorized transducer fields; he is a member of the analog synthesis collective Analogos, which performs regularly at Diapason Gallery.

1974 Educational Communication Centers and the Television Arts Chronology

Conference Educational Communication Centers and the Television Arts convened at SUNY Albany on November 21-22, 1974; coordinated by Gerald O'Grandy of the Center for Media Study at SUNY Buffalo. The stated purpose was to present developments in the video arts and related technology and to outline ways communication centers can serve developing media artists on their campuses and stimulate media activities in the arts and humanities. Presenters included O'Grady, Steina Vasulka (Center for Media Study, U of Buffalo), Tom DeWitt, Paul Kaufman (NCET at KQED), Fred Barzyk (Television Workshop at WGBH), David Loxton (TV Lab at WNET), Ed Emshwiller, Joel Chadabe and representatives from the Experimental Television Center and NYS Council on the Arts.
