1991 Out of Control Chronology

Out of Control 91 was an exhibition at Ars Electronica during Ars Electronica '91; the festival emphasized consequences of technological progress and the dangers associated with increasing mechanization of life and the loss of control of technological systems. During the festival projects were launched addressing global and individual disasters, environmental damage and natural disasters as reactions to these developments; the Out of Control exhibition was described as not aesthetically "beautiful" but aggressive, provocative, critical and disturbing.

Out of Sync: Electronic Visions at the Hudson River Museum Bibliography

Marita Sturken reviews Electronic Visions, a group exhibition of video and computer-based works guest-curated by John Minkowsky (video/electronic arts curator, Media Study/Buffalo) at the Hudson River Museum. The show included installations by Steina and Woody Vasulka, Dan Sandin (computer-generated holograms made with his self-designed Image Processor), Ralph Hocking and Sherry Miller (video The Tub and computer-derived stills), and Gary Hill (Happenstance; Glass Onion), plus single-channel tapes by Peer Bode, Barbara Buckner, Ed Emshwiller, Nam June Paik, and Jane Veeder; Sturken critiques the exhibition's spatial, audio, and installation decisions and highlights technological and curatorial issues.

The Experimental Television Center is located in Owego, central New York State; ETC occupies 180 Front St., on the third floor, and is accessed from exit 64 on Route 17 (Interstate 86). Owen Shapiro People

Owen Shapiro directs the Film Program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University and founded the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival (SIFVF), serving as its artistic director with executive director Christine Fawcett Shapiro. He has led the program since 1973, designed the B.F.A. and M.F.A. curricula and film facilities in the Shaffer Art Building, and has made over 30 films and a dozen videos. His work received a 1976 retrospective at the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris and a 1987 Fulbright Fellowship to teach at Tel-Aviv University.

Pablo Colapinto People

Pablo Colapinto holds a BA in Visual Studies from Harvard University and studied electronic processes under Ivan Tcherepnin; he served as Adjunct Professor at Temple University and as Editor and Instructor at Scribe Video Center. He operated a midi-controlled multi-feed for The Builders Association for the theatrical performance Alladeen at the Biennale in Bonn, Germany; he works with analog video systems and cites the Serge Modular Synthesizer as influential on his conception of sound. Exhibitions include Fleischer-Ollman Gallery and the Philadelphia Streaming Media Festival.
