The Electronic Kitchen

The Electronic Kitchen, New York City, founded by Steina and Woody Vasulka; screening and performance center for the electronic arts at Mercer Arts Center. 1971 established a first annual video festival. Original location at Broadway Central Hotel which housed the Mercer Arts Center.

In 1973 moved to Broome Street. First funded through EAI. Subsequently known as The Kitchen Center for Video, Music and Dance; Video Directors include Shridhar Bapat, Dimitri Devyatkin, Carlota Schoolman, RoseLee Goldberg, Jackie Kain, Greg Miller, Tom Bowes and Amy Taubin.

    The Kitchen Center for Video and Music was founded in 1971 by Woody and Steina Vasulka and relocated in 1973 from the Broadway Central Hotel kitchen to a Broome Street loft. Initially funded through Howard Wise and Electronic Arts Intermix, it became the non-profit Haleakala, Inc. under Robert Stearns and shifted from funding experiments to presenting electronic music and video works. It has shown tapes and performances by artists including Juan Downey, operates a video room for 1/2- and 3/4-inch tapes, publishes a monthly calendar and catalog, and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

  • The Kitchen - Histories Groups

    The Kitchen began in the unused kitchen of the Mercer Arts Center in Greenwich Village in July 1971 and opened June 15, 1971; Woody and Steina Vasulka established it for video and electronic arts, which soon embraced music, performance, dance and film. It relocated from 240 Mercer Street to 59 Wooster Street in late 1973 and incorporated as the not-for-profit Haleakala, Inc. in April 1974, later moving in 1985 to 512 West 19th Street. Support from Electronic Arts Intermix, Howard Wise and the New York State Council on the Arts provided grants, including $15,000 to Perception in 1971 and $8,000 directed to The Kitchen; the organization staged festivals and concert series and invested in production-grade video equipment and media services.

    First Women's Video Festival was presented at The Kitchen at Mercer Arts Center in New York City and organized by Susan Milano. The program included video works by Jackie Cassen, Maxi Cohen, Yoko Maruyama, Susan Milano, Queer Blue Light Video, Keiko Tsuno, Steina and Woody Vasulka, and Women's Video Collective; and featured dance and performance by Judith Scott and Elsa Tambellini.
