Don McArthur

Don McArthur received his PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Nebraska, and worked for three years at the University of Saskatchewan in Nuclear Physics. He has taught physics at the State University College at Cortland and at Binghamton University.

He was associated with the Experimental Television Center beginning in 1974, as a researcher in electronic design. He worked on collaborative projects with Walter Wright, Paul Davis, David Jones and Ralph Hocking of the Center, and with Woody Vasulka and Jeffrey Schier. He designed the Spatial and Intensity Digitizer, which was exhibited at Ars Electronica in Linz in 1992.

    The Spatial and Intensity Digitizer (SAID) was developed for the Experimental Television Center in Binghamton, New York, arising in 1976 from an effort to create a low-cost, video-speed analog-to-digital converter; the project implemented a 6 bit A/D and a companion 6 bit D/A, supported interactive-compositional and automatic-production modes, and produced posterize and mosaic effects in real time. Donald E.     Laurie McDonald studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in the early 1970s and held internships at WNET's Experimental Television Lab and the National Center for Experiments in Television; she co‑founded Electron Movers/Research in the Electronic Arts, Inc., a video co‑op active 1974–1979. In early 1980 she relocated to Houston to direct video projects for the Southwest Alternate Media Project; she received an NEA fellowship and four AFI/NEA awards and her video work has been exhibited internationally. She holds a BFA from RISD and an MA from the University of Houston.

    The Experimental Television Center began as Student Experiments in Television, founded in 1969 by Ralph Hocking at Binghamton University and incorporated in 1971; it provided access to small-format portable video equipment, editing facilities, instructional workshops, community cable programming and an artist residency and exhibition program. A Research Program supported design and construction of video tools, notably the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer (Shuya Abe and Nam June Paik) installed at WNET and the Center in 1972; NYSCA and NEA funding supported work on oscillators, the Jones Colorizer, Analog Control Box, the SAID and computer–video interfaces (LSI-11, Z-80). The Center hosted numerous artists in residence, ran touring exhibitions and statewide workshops, established a tape library and relocated to Owego by 1980.

    Proposal submitted to the New York State Council on the Arts (Center for Microprocessor Research) in 1977 for continued development of an LSI-11 computer-based video generating and processing system; the project began with support from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1976. Researchers associated with the proposal are Ralph Hocking, Dr. Don McArthur and Walter Wright.

    The Spatial and Intensity Digitizer (SAID) is an early digital-video prototype developed in 1976 to provide a low-cost video-speed analog-to-digital solution; it used a 6-bit A/D and companion 6-bit D/A to render 64 grey levels. A horizontally locked oscillator slowed the clock to allow variable horizontal sampling that creates adjustable vertical strips and a posterize bit-selection effect. The prototype was available for experimentation at the Experimental Television Center; documented in the 1980 studio manual by Sherry Miller Hocking and Richard Brewster; exhibited at Video History: Making Connections in 1998.
