Deirdre Boyle authored Subject to Change: Guerrilla Television Revisited (Oxford, 1997), Video Classics: A Guide to Video Art and Documentary Tape (Oryx, 1986) and Video Preservation: Ensuring the Future of the Past (Media Alliance, 1993); she is senior core faculty, Graduate Media Studies, The New School for Social Research, New York. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright at Moscow State University, an Asian Cultural Council research grant, an ACE award (1988) and New School Universitys Distinguished Teaching Award. She organized exhibitions internationally and has written nearly 150 essays.

Delia Gonzalez People

Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom, New York-based artists, released their first full-length album Days of Mars on October 4, 2005 via DFA and Astralwerks; the album comprises four extended tracks including Rise, Black Spring and Relevee and accompanies work on a short film. Both exhibit internationally as video, performance, theatrical and visual artists and have collaborated on films, props, set design and the band Fight Evil with Evil. Gonzalez moved to NYC in the mid-1990s; in 2000 Russom built a modular analog synthesizer that became central to their live music.

Denman's Col (Geometry): Mary Lucier Bibliography

Mary Lucier’s Denman’s Col (Geometry) was shown at the Whitney Museum in November; the installation comprises two synchronous video channels displayed on five monitors mounted in a jagged sculptural framework evoking a city skyline, with screen sizes ranging from 12 in. to 21 in. The work juxtaposes urban architecture and drinking-glass interiors, including a central wine-glass shot reflecting buildings, and uses rotated and inverted screens so a two-channel presentation reads as five channels. Lucier incorporates a layered soundscape—police siren, clothesline squeak, church bells, rain, wind, pouring liquids and a spinning rim note—and the title references a family name and the term col, a pathway between mountains.

Description of the early Image Processor, excerpted from the Macro Proto Proposal Tools

The image processor was constructed under a grant for innovation in undergraduate program development at U.I.C.C. (University of Illinois at Chicago Circle) and is partially completed but functioning; its explicit instruction addresses perceptual learning of two-dimensional kinetic images and its implicit content embodies linear analogue generalized machines and video technology. It accepts moving images from television cameras, film trains or video tape recorders and routes them through modules that modify and combine images; it has operated about four months and was introduced to about seven people, with formal curriculum introduction planned for this fall.

Descriptions of Systems Tools

Siegel Video Systems presented the Electronic Video Synthesizer (E.V.S.) as the first all-electronic video synthesizer, intended for live performance with keyboard, foot pedals and D.C.-coupled signals; information available through Howard Wise Gallery, February 10, 1971. Siegel-Ferraro Electronics distributed the Processing Chrominence Synthesizer (PCS) in 1975 and Siegel Electronics distributed the Processing Chrominance Synthesiser Model 100 in Brooklyn in 1976; the PCS holds U.S. patent no. 3,647,942 and functions as a colour synthesizer and processing amplifier performing sync reconstruction, white peak limiting, keyed clamp D.C. restoration, luminance and detail controls, and chroma/phase adjustments. The PCS was reported in use by colleges and individuals in the U.S. and Canada; cited literature includes Pioneers of Electronic Art (1992) and a 1970 Jud Yalkut interview with Eric Siegel.

Design and Operation of the Spatial and Intensity Digitizer Tools

The Spatial and Intensity Digitizer (SAID) is an early digital-video prototype developed in 1976 to provide a low-cost video-speed analog-to-digital solution; it used a 6-bit A/D and companion 6-bit D/A to render 64 grey levels. A horizontally locked oscillator slowed the clock to allow variable horizontal sampling that creates adjustable vertical strips and a posterize bit-selection effect. The prototype was available for experimentation at the Experimental Television Center; documented in the 1980 studio manual by Sherry Miller Hocking and Richard Brewster; exhibited at Video History: Making Connections in 1998.

Design Device - A Unique Video Synthesizer Tools

Proposal from WMHT TV to the New York State Council on the Arts for the Design Device, a hybrid video synthesizer conceived by Tom DeWitt and Phil Edelstein in 1975 after sketches in Poughkeepsie; DeWitt developed the design drawing on documentation from an NEA Fellowship and with graphic help from Vibeke Sorensen. The instrument was specified to combine vector and intensity approaches, include RAM-based memory oscillators, a RuttEtra display, a camera-controlled matrix switch, a colorizer-sync adder and interfacing to PDP-11/10 computers; WMHT and the Electronic Music Studio at SUNYA supplied facilities and some equipment, the NEA awarded a $10,000 grant in April 1975, and the proposal budget totaled $22,000.26.
