• Juan Downey People

  Juan Downey (1940–1993) was a Chilean-born pioneer video artist who studied architecture at the Catholic University of Chile, attended S.W. Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris, and immigrated to New York in 1965. He produced videotapes, installations, drawings, paintings and performances exploring political discourse, art history and identity; his work was exhibited at institutions including the Whitney, MoMA, Documenta 6 and the Venice Biennale. In 1998 Institut Valencia d'Art Modern mounted a major retrospective; he received support from the Rockefeller and Guggenheim foundations and his work was broadcast on WNET, WGBH and KQED and is available through Electronic Arts Intermix.

• Cary A. Peppermint People

  Cary Peppermint is a conceptual artist and assistant professor of art at Colgate University; he works with digital technologies and performance art and distributes network performances via the website Restlessculture.net. His practice investigates cultural effects of an interconnected, information-based global culture and setting information free through accessible, searchable, database-driven new media; his net.art includes early real-time interactive performances realized via CU-SEEME and early internet browsers. He curated the international exhibitions Technorganic and Wilderness Information Network, received awards including a Franklin Furnace Performance Grant, an Experimental Television Center Workshop Grant, and NYSCA's Decentralization Grant, and his work is held by the Walker Art Center, Rhizome.org at the New Museum for Contemporary Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and Computer Fine Arts.

• Carola Dreidemie People

  Carola Dreidemie is an Argentine artist residing in the United States whose project All Eyez on U.S. places a camera directly in front of subjects, sometimes intrusively close, producing images that resemble police lineups and anthropological studies; the work addresses xenophobia and racism that fuse otherness with criminality. She holds an MFA from Texas Woman's University, an MFA from Pratt Institute, School of Art and Design, and a BFA from Escuela de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredon, Buenos Aires; since 2004 she has taught at the University of Miami in Florida.

• Margarita De la Vega-Hurtado People

  Margarita De la Vega-Hurtado is Executive Director of International Film Seminars, organizers of the Flaherty Film Seminar; she holds a Doctorate in American Culture with a focus on Film Studies from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she was an Adjunct Professor. She has taught at the University of California in Santa Cruz (Merrill College) and has programmed, curated, and presented film programs in Latin American and Latino cinema, independent American cinema, and documentary cinema; she has published papers on those subjects as well as on Colombian cinema, Louis Malle, and Luis Bunuel.

• Ricardo Miranda Zuniga People

  Ricardo Miranda Z?Òiga is an artist who treats art as a social practice aimed at establishing dialogue in public spaces; he was born to immigrant parents and grew up between Nicaragua and San Francisco. His work addresses immigration, discrimination, gentrification and the effects of globalization, using populist metaphors alongside critical perspectives. He maintains a research- and investigation-based practice that presents outcomes across media to generate interaction and discussion; website www.ambriente.com.

  Ernest Gusella reports making three trips to Europe in the past year to show and lecture on his videotapes at museums, galleries, and art schools; he characterizes his art with an idiosyncratic quartering of influences and describes himself as an eclectic, neo-romantic artist.
