ETC History 1977-79

History 1977-78









NYSCA funding helped support the development by David Jones and Richard Brewster of the Analog Control Box, allowing the production of electronic sounds and also signals which controlled parameters of the video signal. The computer project proceeded, assisted by Paul Davis, then director of the student computer lab and instructor at the School for Advanced Technology at SUNY-Binghamton. Artists in Residence included Shalom Gorewitz, Sara Hornbacher, Hank C. Linhart and Hank Rudolph. We conduct workshops for the City of Binghamton, Headstart, Tri Cities Opera, 4H Program and the Center for Media Studies at Buffalo.

    History 1981–82 lists studio artists Frank Dietrich, Thierry Kuntzel, Alex Roshuk and Matt Schlanger and notes Residency Program work exhibited at Siggraph, the Donnell Library, Global Village, the 7th Annual Ithaca Video Projects Festival and the San Francisco International Video Festival.   • ETC History 1975-77

    1975–77 the Residency Program included Nam June Paik and Phil Jones (Ithaca Video Projects) and received National Endowment for the Arts support in 1975 for initial computer-video processing research. The LSI-11 was chosen; Jones developed keyers, a sequential switcher and the Jones Colorizer, a commercial SEG was modified and a 64-point matrix was built, and manuals and Paik Raster Control Unit information were produced and expanded by 1985; Cloud Music (Robert Watts, David Behrman, Bob Diamond) presented at Center, Video by Videomakers began, the computer was installed for artist use and regional school workshops were held with Binghamton's Roberson Center.

  • ETC History 1989-90

    The audio system continues to be expanded; with NYSCA support Megan Roberts and Ray Ghirardo design a digital interface to allow a computer to control multiple audio and video playback sources in three dimensional arrays. Artists in Residence include Benton Bainbridge, Kevin Cook, Francis James, Bianca Bob Miller and Eva Schicker. Presentation Funds assists Hallwalls, Downtown Community TV Center, the Brooklyn Museum and the Asian American Video Festival. Finishing Funds recipients include Maria Beatty, Barbara Hammer and John Knecht; recipients were selected by panelists Raymond Ghirardo and Arthur Tsuchiya.

  • ETC History 1979-81

    1979–80 equipment at the Center included a Z-2 8-bit computer with an S-100 bus, dual floppy drives and a CAT digital frame buffer; a Z-80 was also interfaced to an analog box and software development for video uses began. Artists in residence during 1979–81 included Alan Powell, Connie Coleman, Charles Atlas, Victor Velt, Jud Yalkut, Ren Weidenaar, Dan Reeves, Jon Hilton, Celia Shapiro and Peter D'Agostino; The Electronic Workshop series was presented to 17 organizations around New York State and the Center moved to Owego; in 1980–81 David Jones developed the Print Program for disk-captured videographic still frames with variable gray-level printing and additional software was produced by graduate interns under Paul Davis and Ralph Hocking.

  • ETC History 1973-75

    David Jones became technician at the Center; artists in residence included Taka Iimura, Doris Chase and Michael LV Butler, and the Center ran regular workshops on video production, imaging and synthesis. NYSCA funded traveling performances by Waiter Wright and supported development of the Jones Colorizer and installation of an oscillator bank; workshops and performances took place at The Kitchen, Anthology Film Archives and the Contemporary Art Museum in Montreal. In Spring 1975 Dr. Don McArthur developed the SAID (Spatial and Intensity Digitizer), and David Jones, Don McArthur and Waiter Wright began a computer-based imaging project initially based on an LSI-11; artists in residence included Neil Zusman and Gary Hill.

  • ETC History 1987-89

    1987–89: the Center devised educational strategies to bring artists to fluency on computers and digital devices; a second Amiga was added (one for buffer control; one for videographics and audio), audio capacity gained a Mirage and mixing facilities, and work began on MIDI and control-voltage exchange boxes. The Center launched Electronic Arts Grants Program supported by the New York State Council on the Arts; Presentation Funds supported state exhibitions and Finishing Funds assisted project completion; artists mentioned include Shu Lea Cheang, Bob Doyle, Ernie Gusella, Barbara Hammer, Laurie Beth Clark, Peter Callas, Vanalyne Green, Jon Knecht and Sherry Millner.
