1977 The Independent Film Community Chronology
The Independent Film Community published a report generated by the Mohonk Conference; it identified common areas of concern shared by all media centers, including visibility, funding, communications and publication of efforts and programs. National leadership was identified as a shared need; the report called for advocacy on a national level and public education about the activities of all media centers, including the alternative centers, as important to advancement of the field.

1979 The Independent Producer, Public Television, and New Video Technologies Chronology
On December 10-12, 1979, at John Reilly's conference The Independent Producer, Public Television, and New Video Technologies held at The Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, Brian O'Doherty, Director of the Media Arts Program at the National Endowment for the Arts, announced that funds were being directed to regional organizations. He named the Alabama Filmmakers Coop and the South West Alternate Media Project as examples; the funds were to be distributed to independent makers in those areas.
