    Vibeke Sorensen (©1995) critiques the institutional and historical split between art and science in higher education and argues that the distinction is artificial and increasingly anachronistic; she surveys precedents from Leonardo da Vinci through photography, Impressionism, Cubism and film to contemporary computer graphics, ray tracing, virtual reality, cyberspace, networking and scientific visualization. Sorensen cites Leonard Shlain (Art and Physics, 1991) and Carver Mead (Caltech), notes the journal Leonardo and universities, and calls for multi-layered interdisciplinary education and lifelong self-education.

    Vibeke Sorensen delivered a talk, Panel: The Artist in the 2 and 3 -D Marketplace, at the ACM SIGGRAPH Conference in Boston, Massachusetts on August 2, 1989; she examined artist–industry collaborations and argued for artists as researchers and equal partners with computer scientists in interdisciplinary computer graphics and scientific visualization. She cited Apple Computer, Pacific Data Images, NCSA, SDSC, the Art(n) group, and the National Science Foundation (1987 report), and described projects including NCSA’s Renaissance Teams, an Omnimax project, two Mars Rover animation sequences with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Dr. Brian Muirhead, and an NSF-funded interactive stereoscopic animation project with Dr. Lynn Teneyck at SDSC; she advised artists to prioritize innovation, education, and integrity.

    Vibeke Sorensen prepared this text for the Symposium on Innovation and the Information Environment at the University of Oregon School of Law in Eugene, Oregon, held November 3–4, 1995. She recounts beginning as an architecture student and musician in Copenhagen in 1971 and describes work in real-time computer animation, video, electronic/computer music and computer graphics. Sorensen addresses the convergence of telecommunications and information technologies and the World Wide Web and discusses innovation, market and access issues on the Internet, intellectual-property questions for digital art, and possible public funding and infrastructure models such as the World Bank or United Nations.
