Jeffrey Hoone documents Light Work, an artist-run photography organization rooted at Syracuse University that emerged from a 1972 student movement to create a media center; founders Phil Block and Tom Bryan organized the University Union Community Darkrooms and University Union Television and secured early support from Synapse and the New York State Council on the Arts. Light Work developed exhibitions, workshops, a grant program, and an Artist-in-Residence program (1976) and publishes Contact Sheet; by 1980 its programs and national reputation were established and staff grew to four full-time positions.
