Renee Tajima

Tajima-PeÒa was born in Chicago and raised in Altadena, California, where she graduated from John Muir High School in the class of 1976. She received a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies and Sociology Cum Laude, from Harvard-Radcliffe College, Cambridge, MA, in 1980. She is currently the Graduate Director of the Masters Program in Social Documentation and an associate professor of community studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Her honors include an Academy Award nomination for Best Feature Documentary, a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, the Alpert Award for Film/Video, the James Wong Howe "Jimmie" Award, the Justice in Action Award, and two International Documentary Association Achievement Awards (one shared), the Media Achievement Award from MANAA, the Steve Tatsukawa Memorial Award and the APEX Excellence in the Arts Award. She has twice earned Fellowships in Documentary Film from both the Rockefeller Foundation and the New York Foundation on the Arts. Her works have been broadcast around the world and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, London Film Festival, New Directors/New Films, Sundance Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, the Whitney Biennial and many other venues.

    Jean Carlomusto of New Hyde Park, NY, is professor of communication arts at C.W. Post, Long Island University; she received the 1999 Long Island University Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement (TASA) at the 21st awards on April 20. In collaboration with Ronaldo Kiel she held residencies at Dance Theater Workshop's Media Lab (2004) and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center (2005) and produced site-specific installations and commissions including Novel Lift (Brooklyn Public Library, 2005), Journey (Oi Futura, Oct 2007), Relay (Central Library, Feb 2008) and Remembered River (Connecticut College, Feb 2008).

  • Maria Dumlao People

    Maria Dumlao, born in Manila and based in Brooklyn, NY, received an MFA from Hunter College in 2003 and teaches at Hostos Community College of CUNY; she held two residencies at Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY. Her work has been exhibited and screened at Art in General and Momenta Art Gallery in NYC and at The Contemporary Museum in Hawaii, and internationally. As Brainstormers with Elaine Kaufmann, Danielle Mysliwiec and Anne Polashenski she published in Women's Studies Quarterly, Women & Environments, produced Puffin Foundation funded artists books and received an Official Selection at the 41st BAC Film and Video Festival.

  • Scott Nygren People

    Scott Nygren received a BA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1968 and a PhD from SUNY-Buffalo in 1982; he joined the Film and Media Studies Program at UF in 1990 after roles at SUNY Buffalo, the Museum of Modern Art and the University of Toledo. He has lived in Japan and Paris and authored Time Frames: Japanese Cinema and the Unfolding of History (University of Minnesota Press, 2007); he has published essays in books and journals such as Wide Angle and produced video art tapes and installations.

  • Maureen Turim People

    Maureen Turim earned a BA (1973), MA (1975) and PhD (1978) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; her studies included periods in France at L'Université d'Aix-Marseille (1971—72), L'…cole des Hautes …tudes and Paris III (1973—74). She taught at the State University of New York at Binghamton from 1977 until joining the UF faculty in 1991; she is author of Abstraction in Avant-Garde Films (Ann Arbor: UMI Research Press), Flashbacks in Film: Memory and History (New York: Routledge), and The Films of Oshima: Images of a Japanese Iconoclast (Berkeley: University of California Press). Turim has published over fifty essays in anthologies and journals on cinema and related fields, with several translated into French and German; she has also written catalogue essays for museum exhibitions.
