MEDIA PROGRAM

The Media Program's constituents are concerned with the creation and dissemination of the electronic arts. Throughout the Council's years of support to the medium, this new art form has gained steadily increasing recognition. In the past year, the Media Program continued to support organizations that have demonstrated a strong leadership role in the emergence of the field and to encourage new projects and artists just entering this area.

In 1983-84, the Media Program made awards to 80 organizations for 145 projects. Of the program's allocation of $1,200,000, $300,000 was directed toward production and post-production of video and audio art, documentary and narrative projects. Substantial levels of support were awarded for exhibition, distribution and services. It was a year of expanded activity in all three of these areas.

Support was given to several organizations for first-time exhibition projects; organizations that received funding for providing distribution services developed new clients here and abroad; and the Media Alliance, the principal service organization for the field developed new cooperative programs with industry. The program continued to provide funds for 3 state-wide regrant programs in which institutions match Council funds that are then made available to individual artists. Development support was given for the creation of a new rough-edit facility in New York City. Support was continued for service organizations that have created collaborations with commercial fine-editing facilities that offer substantial reductions in their hourly rate for media artists.
