Mohonk Conference

Mohonk Conference, officially titled the Conference on Regional Development of Film Centers and Services, organized by the Museum of Modern Art and the Pacific Film Archives. A national conference held February 1973 at Mohonk, NY, attended by about 30 directors of regional media programs. About 33% of participants represented organizations which were not in existence at the time of the writing of the Stanford Report (1967).

Most of the participants represented foundations, universities, museums and governmental entities; the alternative spaces were not represented. Conference support from Rockefeller Foundation, the John and Mary Markle Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. The report "The Independent Film Community" was published in 1977.

    The Independent Film Community published a report generated by the Mohonk Conference; it identified common areas of concern shared by all media centers, including visibility, funding, communications and publication of efforts and programs. National leadership was identified as a shared need; the report called for advocacy on a national level and public education about the activities of all media centers, including the alternative centers, as important to advancement of the field.

  • Pittsburgh Filmmakers Chronology

    Pittsburgh Filmmakers convened a meeting in June 1978 to address issues raised by the Mohonk Conference and the publication The Independent Film Community; participants judged the public unaware of independent media activities and national organizations such as the AFI insufficiently responsive. Twenty-three of the largest media centers attended but the meeting was not representative, prompting a perception that national, unified action was needed. A Steering Committee was formed to call the 1979 Minnewaska Conference; it represented the Rocky Mountain Film Center, the Northwest Film Study Center, the Bay Area Video Coalition, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, the Boston Film/Video Foundation and AIVF.

It records antecedent studies and conferences including the Stanford Report (1967), the Mohonk Conference (1973), the Pittsburgh Conference (1978) and the Minnewaska/1979 National Conference; funding came from the Rockefeller Foundation, the John and Mary Markle Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and publications include The Independent Film Community (1977) and the 1979 conference report. Organizers and leaders named include Virgil Grillo and Robert Haller; NAMAC approved bylaws, set objectives and identified 17 project areas including network feasibility, touring projects, surveys and information exchange.

  • National Conference of Media Arts Centers Chronology

    The Foundation for Independent Video and Film hosted the National Conference of Media Arts Centers at Lake Minnewaska, NY, April 25–27, 1979; funding was provided by the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. A Steering Committee organized the meeting attended by representatives of 47 organizations and 12 governmental agencies, attendance was limited to 63 by a selection process and about 20% were from artist-based organizations. The conference addressed distribution, new technologies, media arts center development, broadcast access and funding; it charged a committee to form a national coalition of organizations from 11 geographic zones, with regional meetings held March–May 1980 and individual representation added by October 1980.
