Melinda Rackham

Melinda Rackham ([email protected]) is an artist and writer based in Sydney, Australia, who has been working online since the mid 1990s in her domain www.subtle.net constructing imaginal and hypertextual sites. Melinda's web practice has investigated the technological and psychological aspects of online identity, locality, sexuality and community, as well as viral symbiosis and trans species relations. She is currently undertaking a Phd in Virtual Media at College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Australia.

As well as her web work, Rackham's writing encompasses the nature and construction of Virtual Space, appearing online and in print in arenas like Ctheory, Culture Machine, Leonardo, and Realtime. Conference presentations include Contagion in Australia, Invencao in Brazil, and Consciousness Reframed in Wales. She has participated in residencies at Polar Circuit in Finland and Discovery at Banff Center for the Arts, Canada. Her award winning web works have been included in Beyond Interface, Arco Electronico, Perspecta, Transmediale, File, Art Entertainment Network, The Montreal Biennale, European Media Art Festival, and ISEA.

    Melinda Barlow is Associate Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; she joined CU in 1996 after teaching at New York University, the School of Visual Arts, and Queens College, City University of New York. She edited Mary Lucier: Art and Performance (2000, Johns Hopkins University Press) and is a film and video historian specializing in contemporary independent women film and videomakers; her articles have appeared in journals including Camera Obscura and Art Journal. She received the Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Award and a CU Center for the Humanities and the Arts Fellowship in 2005; she founded the Leah Kelly Memorial Award and has a forthcoming book, Lost Objects of Desire (University of Minnesota Press).

    Laurie Beth Clark was raised in New York City and holds a B.A., an M.A. in Visual Arts and an M.F.A.; since 1985 she has lived in Madison, Wisconsin, where she teaches Installation and Video and has held administrative roles. Her multidisciplinary practice uses video, performance, installation and multimedia to examine social issues; projects in Germany consider the holocaust and other genocides, and she is developing international research on trauma memorials and shopping environments. She received fellowships from Jerome and McKnight and published in anthologies such as A Performance Cosmology (Routledge, 2006).

    Prema Murthy examines the shifting boundaries of a gendered and socially constructed body by remapping its surface through new technologies; she explores gender embodiment through performance, net-based installation, digital prints and sound. Her work has been shown at venues including The Clocktower Gallery-NY, The Gertrude Stein Repertory Theater-NY, Sandra Gering Gallery-NY, MIT-Cambridge, MA, The Alternative Museum-NY, The University of Iowa-IA and The Bianca Pilat Gallery-Milan, IT; she has collaborated with Floating Point Unit, The Electronic Disturbance Theater and Fakeshop. She has been awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Computer Arts and is currently an artist-in-residence at Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center in New York; in the Fall 1999 she will present with Fakeshop the performance/installation multiple_dwelling at The Ars Electronica Festival.
