Martha Rosler

Rosler is an artist who works with video, photography, text, and performance, as well as writing criticism. She teaches photography and media studies at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and at the Whitney Independent Studies Program in New York City.

Her most recent videotape, Born to Be Sold: Martha Rosler Reads the Strange Case of Baby S M (1988), was produced in collaboration with Paper Tiger Television, a New York-based local public access cable cooperative. It addresses issues of gender, class, reproduction, and representation.

    Martha Rosler lives and works in New York; her videos, photo-texts, installations and performances have been presented at documenta (Kassel, Germany), several Whitney Biennials and major institutions in London and New York. A 2000 retrospective toured five European cities and New York (New Museum of Contemporary Art; International Center of Photography); in Fall 2006 she is participating in the Hannah Arendt Denkraum in Berlin and her work will be on view at the 2007 Skulptur Projekte in M¸nster, Germany and at Saigon Open City, the first biennial in Vietnam.

    Leah Gilliam (b. 1967, Washington, DC) is a video and new-media artist and Associate Professor of Film and Electronic Arts at Bard College. She studied at Brown (B.A.) and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (M.F.A.) and presented her first solo museum exhibition, Agenda for a Landscape, at the New Museum in 2002. Her video Apeshit was named one of Film Comment's Best of 1999 and Sapphire and the Slave Girl won the New Visions Video Award; her projects received funding from Creative Capital and New York State Council on the Arts.

    Melinda Barlow is Associate Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; she joined CU in 1996 after teaching at New York University, the School of Visual Arts, and Queens College, City University of New York. She edited Mary Lucier: Art and Performance (2000, Johns Hopkins University Press) and is a film and video historian specializing in contemporary independent women film and videomakers; her articles have appeared in journals including Camera Obscura and Art Journal. She received the Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Award and a CU Center for the Humanities and the Arts Fellowship in 2005; she founded the Leah Kelly Memorial Award and has a forthcoming book, Lost Objects of Desire (University of Minnesota Press).
