Howard Weinberg

Howard Weinberg is an award-winning independent documentary film and television producer who has created significant public and commercial television programming. His innovative reporting and imaginative producing have contributed to the successes of major figures in American journalism.

A documentary filmmaker with wide-ranging interests, Weinberg produced "Topless Cellist" Charlotte Moorman, a half-hour video commissioned as a tribute to the late impresario and performance artist by her long-time collaborator, the seminal video artist Nam June Paik. Originally broadcast on WNET/New York, "Topless Cellist" was selected for screening by the New York Film Festival; it played for four months at Holly Solomon Gallery in SoHo and has been shown on television and at museums and festivals worldwide. http://www.howardweinberg.net

    John Hanhardt is curator of film and video at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; he integrated video into the Whitney’s exhibition program and curated the Nam June Paik retrospective in 1982. Trained at NYU with a MoMA internship, he became Whitney department head in 1974 after serving at the Walker Art Center; he organized Projected Video (1975) and Re-Vision (1979) and placed video in Biennials from 1973. He secured Rockefeller Foundation funding to equip the theater, is writing Expanded Form in Film and Video (due spring 1983), and pursued touring and distribution via the AFA.

    Katie Halper is a New York City comedian, documentary filmmaker, and activist; she graduated from Wesleyan University in 2003 and worked as development director for DCTV while coordinating living-wage and labor campaigns in NYC and Florida. She was associate producer of Estela Bravo's Free to Fly and co-produced Tim Robbins' Embedded; she served as outreach director for Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis's The Take. Her documentary La Memoria es Vaga screened at film festivals in Spain and the U.S.; she performs comedy in the city and hosts the monthly show Red Diaper Baby Presents.

    John G. Hanhardt is Senior curator of film and media arts at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; he holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester and an M.A. from New York University. He was film coordinator at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1972–74) and curator and head of the film and video department at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1974–96).     Owen Shapiro directs the Film Program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University and founded the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival (SIFVF), serving as its artistic director with executive director Christine Fawcett Shapiro. He has led the program since 1973, designed the B.F.A. and M.F.A. curricula and film facilities in the Shaffer Art Building, and has made over 30 films and a dozen videos. His work received a 1976 retrospective at the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris and a 1987 Fulbright Fellowship to teach at Tel-Aviv University.

    Julie Gustafson is a pioneering video-documentary maker who produced several major documentaries for public television; in 1978 she became co-director, with John Reilly, of Global Village and co-founded the Documentary Film Festival of New York. Her social-issue work includes the 60-minute public-television film Abortion: Across the Barricades and national PBS broadcasts Giving Birth, Pursuit of Happiness, and Casting the First Stone. Born in 1949, she holds a B.A. from Brandeis, received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and lives in New Orleans.
