Ernesto Livon-Grosman

Ernesto Livon-Grosman, who was born in Argentina, lives in the United States where he teaches film and literature at Boston College. He is the director of Cartoneros, a feature-length documentary, which portrays the process of informal recycling in his native Buenos Aires. The documentary explores the connections between the recurrent social and political crisis, economic disintegration, and globalization that have affected Argentina during the last 50 years.

He is now working on a series of short documentaries on the history of South American visual poetry.

More than thirty films have been broadcast in over thirty-five countries; with Kathy Brew he produced a Snug Harbor installation (Oct 2001–Jan 2002) and Paradise Now (WNET/Thirteen, Jan 2001), and received Emmy awards in 1999 and 2000.

  • Greg Berger People

    Greg Berger is a filmmaker and professor of video who produces award-winning documentaries on grassroots social movements in Mexico and the Americas and has made experimental short narratives on Revolutionary Tourism. He coordinates the Dispatches From America Rebelde tour, bringing Latin American social-justice documentaries to United States universities and community centers with moderated virtual town meetings between US audiences and activists in Mexico and Bolivia; his work has screened on six continents. His 2004 short GringotÛn received the Latin American Studies Association Award for Merit in Film.

  • Daniel Boord People

    Daniel Boord is a second-generation video artist who collaborated with Argentine artist Luis Valdovino and filmmaker Greg Durbin to explore cultural identity and everyday life through what critic David Antin calls homeless narratives. His works were screened at La Biennale di Venezia in 2000 and 2003 and broadcast on WNET (New York) and WGBH (Boston). His works are held by The Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Everson Museum (Syracuse, NY) and have been exhibited at festivals including Toronto and Edinburgh.

    John Hess and Patricia R. Zimmermann argue for a construct of transnational documentaries as adversarial media practice to contest corporate transnational concentration, deregulation and privatization; they document activist media practices and works such as Zoned for Slavery, Walt Disney in Haiti, El Naftazteca, Spin and Sonic Outlaws and cite institutional events including the February 1, 1996 telecommunications law and the 8th MacBride Roundtable (Seoul, Aug 24–27, 1996). The manifesto situates film and media scholarship within policy, political economy and international coalition-building and calls for interdisciplinary, transnational alliances and public-space interventions; both authors teach in Ithaca College’s Department of Cinema and Photography.
