Charles Dennis

Charles Dennis is an inter-disciplinary artist -- choreographer, performance artist and videographer. He has received Fellowships from the National Endowment For the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art and the UCLA National Dance Media Fellowship Program. Charles Dennis' performances combine movement, text and media to create what Dancemagazine has described as "physical theater". His repertory includes solo works as well as inter-generational group works that he directs.

He has frequently worked in residency situations to create works that feature a high degree of community participation. His 1993 critically acclaimed work "Full House" toured as a community art project in this country. Charles Dennis is also a gifted teacher who has taught workshops in dance, performance art and video in a wide variety of venues including schools, mental health facilities, senior centers and universities since 1977. He is currently on the teaching artist rosters of the Educational Video Center, Inc. and the Lincoln Center Institute.

Charles Dennis is a co-founder of Performance Space 122, one of this country's most active centers for new dance & performance art. Charles Dennis is also the director and producer of Alive & Kicking, a documentary video series that profiles individual dance and performance artists that is being distributed to educational institutions worldwide. He is currently working on a documentary film, "Homecoming", funded by the National Initiative for the Preservation of America's Dance (NIPAD), that celebrates 20 years of dance at P.S. 122.
